I have just got my hands on a POLY 61, and I am very happy. I am starting to learn to play keyboards at the moment.
I first heard this synth on an Austrian website, and as part of a sound workshop; was impressed with the sounds it could produce. I found them expressive,and I really fell in love with some of the arpeggio/ pad mixes.
Now I have one I cant wait to get a multi tracker and start recording.
As for the actual synth- I dont mind the programming functions, and with time I think I will become adept. The pads are just what I like, and I love the way it is set up.

the korg poly 61 was my second synth i ever owned,my first being the ensoniq esq1. spending many long nights making as many strange sounds as i could with the poly 61, i found that in deed this was a very awsome sounding keyboard, its sound, to me was very rich and very dark,with its wicked punchy bass and slow ambeint string sounds,and truly awsome resonants filter, cool for a very cheap buy at only 100 bucks, you cant go wrong, its handy in any recording set up.

The Poly 61 makes some good bass and blippy sounds but it's nothing spectacular. The pads sound thin and harsh, which is where it most obviously fails when compared to a more expensive synth like a Jupiter 6. Plus the JP6 has MANY more sound creation options. Many people here say that the Poly 61 is great value for money because you can get one for around $100 - $300, but really, when you take into account the features it offers and it's sound quality, it's actually pretty average. Look at the similar prices for synths like the 'SCI six-trak' or the Akai AX73' (infact both these synths offer MORE features than the Poly 61!). Then there's the Korg Polysix, which sells for about the same, but sounds warmer, more powerful and has a much better UI (knobs as opposed to tedious button programming). I think most people here have just walked into Cash Converters without actually shopping around. They thought they were getting a superior sounding Casio and then got all excited when they realised it could do more than play presets. Sounds harsh, I know, but it's really not such a great synth for the money, and it looks like shit!

A very underated synth, if this had a cool name like a DX7 or Jupiter 6.
I would undoubtedly get the respect it doesn't. This synth produces analogue bass, leads and effects as good as a Jupiter 6 anyday. I am serious I have compared the two. If you think I am kidding check out an electro track called the soul (nah alfisch) by hashim. The sounds on that track are ALL Poly 61 along with a Tr 808 DRUM machine.
The fact that you can pick these up for as little as 50 POUNDS when people will shell out 15 times that for a jupiter 6 shows are many people follow the hype and walk down the street of analogue snobbery. I will repeat the Poly61 is every bit as good as a Jupiter 6. And you will save yourself a small fortune.

This is a great synth. It doesn't offer many modulation options beyond the standards. However, it has big sounding oscilators and a very raw filter. It is great at doing sid/old Bally's arcade games type sounds with its arpegiator. It is great at raw bass and leads. Granted it doesn't have a million knobs. I picked mine up for$50.
I like to run it through other synths' filters for some sick results.
