A true digital classic, with amazing (and thus very recognizable) presets. The lack of resonance on the filters is one of Korg's all-time f***k-ups; this thing would be PERFECT with a fat multi-mode resonant filter. Oh, well.
Why buy? Pads, pads, pads. The Wavestation IS ambient music. You wanna make electronic soundtracks? Buy a Wavestation, a sequencer and a DAT-deck, and you could be there. The internal effects are very professional and useful. It looks like a million dollars (as far as digital money-transfers go). Love it, sold it alas, would buy it again. This is the first synth I paid real money for, never regretted it (except the low exchange I got for it).

Erik- The Wavestation AD has the analogue inputs not the Wavestation SR.
I own both the AD and SR (and would probably have had an EX version to had it not been for owning too many keyboards already!). These synthes sound like nothing else on the planet and Korg should bring out a post 2000 version! It would be hot!
The Wavestation series (particularly the AD version with it's analogue inputs) will become classics in the next few years. Nothing has come out that sounds like them period.
PS- If Korg had given them multimode resonant filters- they would have been the most powerful synthes released this side of a Z1!

I have all three models, the EX, the AD and the SR and I guess anyone who is interested in the Wavestation series will read all the reviews for all three models on this site to get a pretty good idea of what the Wavestations can do. I use mine with a Yamaha G10 Midi Guitar. I like the evolving wave sequences that I can get going with the lower strings while I play the melody stuff on the higher strings. The wavestations are well suited for using alternate controllers as they implement all four midi modes.
There is a lot of patches on the web and for sale so even if you don't want to program the Wavestation, there is no reason to get bored with the presets. Also the Midiquest and Unisyn editor librarians do an O.K. job of keeping everything somewhat straight as the voice-patch-wave sequences-performances architecture is the most tangled of anything I have seen. I have played around with Sound Diver but I can't recommend it to the faint of heart as it doesn't seem to want to save banks just one big chunk of data as a library. Also there is a stand alone editor librarian by Mark Lanoska (sp?) of Nova Scotia, Canada. I think he calls it Wavestation 32 Edit. It is posted on the net and it costs $35 for the complete version. It is the most elegant editor librarian available and you can customize it to the wavestation model(s) you own.
The 3 volt round "button" lithium battery (CR 2032 that is used in the MCR03 Ram Cards for the Wavestations, also are used to back up the internal ram memories. These batteries can be easily replaced by the user. They are in little plastic holders on the main circuit board and the old battery can be slid out and new one slid back in. I have done it myself on the SR last week. (The SR even showed a warning when I powered it up saying "Low Battery - Replace". I backed up my data to my computer but I was pleasantly surprised that replacing the battery caused no loss of data in the SR).
I have had no problems with my Wavestaions and due to their unique sound I don't plan to part with them.

Probably one of the best keyboards ever designed. It really deserved to be successful. But was a few to many years before its time I believe. The TRANCEY /NEW AGE stuff is more popular now than say back in 1991. Damn shame that KORG didn't continue with it.
If it had been updated to todays standards.......Uhh la la baby !
Not many keyboards around where you can hold down a chord and the sound is still evolving from timbre to the next.
Lack of resonant filter is its drawback.. Unique and distinctive sound is its power base!

Amazing synth! Great strings and "carpet" sounds. It gives an almost total freedom in the patch creating process. Its clean and fat sounds are, in my opinion still competitive.
