Got this two months ago for 80 EUR from ebay in great shape. I wanted to use this as small, portable unit for my guitar rack to play through a bass pedal. But that would mean only using a fraction of its possibilities. The sounds cover a wide variety and the presets hardly use all of the available multisamples. Amazing what they managed to put in 8 Mb ROM in these days.

Overall sound quality is quite good for the price and time of making, though I have to say that my Yamaha SY85, which is also basically a rompler and from 4 years earlier, sounds much better in most sound categories and its effects are also way better than those of the X5DR, even tough those are not bad really too. Where the Korg shines is in ethereal pads and sci-fi type sounds and some exotic combinations (check out "The Sphinx" or "<The East>" and "<The West>" for example). I also like some of the acoustic instrument sounds (woodwinds and brass esp.) but I don't generally use these very often.

Pianos are plasticky, nineties type, even the famous M1 piano multisample is on board. As are many of the other famous samples from X5DR's predecessors, the M1, T3, X3, X5 etc., so if you always wanted a taste of "Lore", "Universe" and the likes, here's your chance to get them for a great price!

If you're into Dance, Trance, House and Techno, there's a great soundbank for the compatible X5 from a guy named JayB, just search on the net... Another great resource for sounds and information is the Korgy Park website, you'll find everything related to the Korg X5(DR) there. To summarize my opinion: this is a great addition to my gear and you want find another module with this small size for the same budget price. If you have a few quid more, you might want to look at the Roland JV-1010 instead. I wouldn't recommend this as your only hardware synth, since having a keyboard where you can twiddle the knobs directly and have much more accessible interface just gives you more inspiration.

I found this piece of crap at a college some idiot left it behind when they went to London. It's good for kung fu sounds like 'zen garden' and silly sex sounds such as 'bellendra' and 'drill me'. The general midi bank would fit in very nicely with some early 90's music such as the spice girls

yes this unit really does pack a good punch , I bought one back in the mid 90's to be my main voice module for cakewalk. It still has some better electic piano, tine, and analog type sounds than some of these new soft synths, even the percusioin and drum sounds are still great. I find that some of the guitar sounds tweeked a bit even beat soem of the new softsynths , this was a nice little find only bad thing is it cost me 700 dollars in the ninties but it is definitly worth what it brings now and its not virtuakl its real . It would be nice to be able to control it as a virtual instrument in your daw there is software out there that says you cant but I havnt tried it and dotn rely on this module for the bes treal piano sounds but

Bought this unit 7 years ago with regards to 64 note polyphony and Ai synthesis which I had previously heard. I'm still amazed what awesome sounds can be generated and downloading patches can assist in taking you that extra step beyond what is naturally included. These downloads also indicate the huge potential the very effective effects units have in tailoring sounds. String sounds are tops, (even beat some of my Triton sounds), esp a downloaded one called "pink string". Pianos usable if layered (though poor by todays stds), e-Pianos superb, guitars about the best I have heard on any synth, good brass and woodwind. Special combis with those 'film score' type sounds are so deep, and the drum section so varied that you can select a bank to suit any type of music. Overall the sound fills a nice gap between clinical new digital synth and older PCM types, so very useful. All in all a fab box of tricks which I will never sell. well done korg! AJ

Bought one a couple of weeks ago off ebay for just about nothing. I read the reviews first before buying and said to myself, what the heck. Man was I surprised. Being the owner of a Triton Le, I wanted something else to drive the board. But something told me to try and hook it up to something less expensive like my Casio 711ex. Wow, what a tremdous difference it has made. I mean you can come up with some awesome layered sound from such a small package. For the money, even if you spend $200.00 of more, it's worth it. You won't regret it at all
