I have, over the course of about 5 months, thoroughly tried all of the major contending V-analog synths that basically just arrived on the market. The Nord(not nord2), an1x, jp8000, and of course the Z1. And i was blown away by this demon. I actually thought it was too good to be true when i put it up against the other's. It may be more expensive (it's going down rapidly though) but for the extra $$$ you definately get MORE. It took me a good while to come up with good basses or classic analog sounds on the jp8k...the an1x is nice but it is lacking some key features, and of course the nord which is great but also has a bit of a RELATIVELY plain simplicity to it. The X-Y pad is a fantastic idea, all of 13(???) osc's are great, tons of effects, can make moog,oberheim,waldorf,303 hell any kind of kick ass bass you want i just can't stop programming sounds! I get picky because every twitch of the knobs and edits makes a totally different sound. To me the interface is VERY SIMPLE and effective despite some reports...maybe because i'm used to the wavestation which is similar i suppose. The arpeggio is the best one i've seen as well though it is a bit complicated but hey better for the user in the long run! THE synth of this decade without a doubt, but with the v-analog era just becoming it should be very exciting to see what's up next.

THis synth rocks! There are paticular reasons that i decided on this synth compared to others. For one main reason is that its the BEST real time programing/tweaking synth there is in my opinion. Everybody dogs the acoustic sound on it but i though that was the Z1's BEST features. Its 6 part multi timberal and i bought it with the 18 voices maxed out allready. I allready have a sampler and a computer sequecer so the synth power of this board rocks the socks. The arpegator on this thing is waaaaayyy kewl. It has this option called Keyboard and latch on the arp. when you have those 2 buttons pressed, you can really hear the polyphonic arpeggiator, it plays the chord and the singled notred arpeggator sequenced out and of course you can sync it to midi. thats that real time thing i was talkin about. Also i love composing classical music on it. It has all the physical modeling acoustic sounds for that and i can also add those wierd phat, punchy basslines with those sounds. and compose them all with my cubase. of course all the knobs transmit midi signals so you can record all those tweaks for any timbre and grove on that real time composing. The synth is versital to anything so if you have a sequencer and you like just playing too this synth blows the others away. Its not allways the sound or specific options on a board that important, its how it FEELS!

If you know exactly what you are not going to get with the Z1, then you can't go wrong. Can you live without a floppy drive? 12 or 18 voices enough for you? How many different sounds do you need to generate at once, 6 or less i hope. Are the effects going to suffice? Ask yourself these questions before even listening to the Z1. So If you want a REAL synthesizer with insane amounts of real time mod sources, motivating snythesis capabilities and a brilliant arp. look no further. I run Cubase VST, so when I max out the Z1 I just record the parts directly into cubase as wav files. The only other synth out that is comparable is the yamaha EX series stuff. Check out both before you purchase.

The Korg Z1 is the most dynamic synth I have ever came accross. Midi functionality is superb. Expressive control is out of this world. It takes some time getting used to all the different oscillation parameters etc. but once these have been mastered you will have a completely new controlled power of sound at your finger tips. You really can't get bored with this machine. The more power of imagination you have the more you will get from your Z1. Well done to Korg, you have definately pulled a cracker. What technology is there left to explore.? All the best to the Z1 lovers, especially the Techno crowd, this is our machine.!! Over and out, Ronnie Whittaker - Ultimate S.T. (Scotland, Glasgow).
