I owned one in 1987 and it was at the time my first "real synthesizer" after owning a pathetic Akai AX 76. The DS 8 was way better in comparison to the Akai but cheesy when comparing it to the powerful winner at the time, The DX7. The sounds were not very pleasing and actually the synthesizer to own if you're seeking quality vintage from Korg is the DW8000. Now there's an awesome synth that's worth owning for its sound architecture and warm sounds. It came before the DS8 and it blows it away. I believe it was the last synth from Korg as they were planning to make synth history with the M1. The DS8 looks pretty but does not hold up like others. I sold it for 200 bucks in 1992 and have never looked back.

Just bought one of these off ebay for 87 pounds, well looking forward to getting my hands on it. Just thought Id point out that the manual can be downloaded from Korg UK's support page.

Wow what great organs this have, superthight.Strings is also good but then you have to use unison and it becomes almost monophonic. Without unison it sound very weedy. epiano bells and soundeffects is also good. Many sounds have a boomeffect if you use unison.Synthleads is also good if you use unison.Organ is what this synth is all about. If the strings had been polyphonic in unison it would have been a supersynth.

I have just come across this board after a clearout from another studio. I powered it up after hearing from my colleague how awfully cheesey it was. So after a bit of fun i switched it on and god it was bloody awful, after 40 patches i was about to turn it off. But then one patch kind of amazed me, it was a floaty electric piano with LFO synced to the Tri wave on Eg amplitude. And it sounded beautiful. So i played some more with it, and realised that inside this synth was some very exceptional sounds.

It really could amaze you how lush and beautiful and subtle it coud be, the percussive timbres as all FM synths were good. But this Korg really surprised me. And after a good 2 days tweaking i played a solo in a mix for my colleague and he said he loved the sound, and where it come from. That heap of rubbish you said was useless. That said this is a Synth of poles, one sublime, the other terrible. But its sinple, just reprogram the sounds you want into the other sounds. On eof those little gems that surprise you once in a while, truly is.
