Beautiful string & grand piano sound! Yes, you do have to edit the basic sound to achieve beauty. Nice Organ sound as well. The user interface is very easy to use and understand. The power supply, on the other hand, is too heavy and outdated. Overall, very nice keyboard.

Very light, small and the most portable kboard i've seen. This is almost perfect for me..except for the piano sound. I also have a PSR740 and its piano sounds is very rich considering that it is almost 3 times the price of the X5D. X5 piano is not that good..The synth, brass, strings are, however, excellent and top caliber. It's only the piano area that prevents the X5D from becoming perfect...

The last time I used a Korg X5 was in 1997. We had three of them at College and used them with an Atari running Cubase.
The X5 uses the same AI square synthesis method as the other Korg synthesizers that were around at the time, the O series being one of them. Many of the sounds are of a similar nature (so yes, the acoustic piano sound wasn't improved). I did find out though that Dario G (whoa! remember them?) recorded the piano line in Sunchyme using a Korg piano sound which I thought was really cool at the time. The X5 sound combinations were different to the O series, but many of the single sounds were identical, such as Analog Pad. The drum sounds were also much the same as on the O series.
First impressions of the X5 are that it is a low budget synthesizer. It looks a little cheap, and the keyboard felt cheap and spongy (although I imagine it will never get sticky keys no matter how rough you are with it). Plastic? Hmmm was never a fan. I'd rather it were built the old fashioned way.
Appearances aside, the X5 represents great value for money, bringing professional industry standard Korg sounds to the lower budget market, and the X5 is probably the most portable 5-octave keyboard there is. I would also agree that the X5 is a great desktop workstation for the computer-based studio musician.
The X5 - a small, portable package offering some great sounds at a low price. I score 3 on the scale although my actual score is somewhere between 3.5 and 3.9.

Bought one a while back for my son. It's a good buy. The sounds are always competent,and sometimes excellent. Really great strings. The build is good though the synth is light and very portable. A good wide editing spec, though the filter lacks resonance. You can't really go wrong with this synth if you are in to computer based music production. It is a cheaper and more developed alternative to an M1, with which it shares many similarities, especially with editing. Great value for money. This synth puts many other synths to shame in this respect. For example, the JV30. The synth drops one mark because of the wall-wort power supply. Otherwise, it's a great deal. I paid �120 for one in excellent condition with a flight bag, psu, leads and instructions. Silly money for a serious synth.

I feel the X5 is an untouchable synth, expecially if your looking for that post-keyboard quality. This keyboard marks emblem of "WICKED STRINGS" and still by far the best I've heard. The X5 @ $750.00 can. is still a good buy, but as we all know KORG rules in the synth area. So if your looking for that basic...easy switched on SYNTH..place your 10 on the X5, the on board processor's are a "KILLER" and some of the percussion effects are nice as well. CHEERS
