Just for the record, I'll just say that i'm not a huge fan of workstations. My review is solely based on the sounds.

My good producer friend got one of these many years ago, and we spent a good amount of time auditioning the factory sounds--and I was not impressed in the least. The moog and all the other analog samples sounded very canned, and sterile. The organ and acoustic sounds were decent, however.

As for the programming, I cannot comment on it because I only program synths that have knobs and sliders--not menus or algorhythms.

Let me say that this is the best line of workstations ever made. I own the K2000RS with Orchestral ROM and even after 15 years of existance these remain the best Orchestral Emulations in any hardware system. Drum Garden is amazing and and Batman Strings is epic, first rate for film scoring. This is the second unit I have owned. I have also used the K2VXS on professional underground metal recordings. I must say that the level of programability is almost endless if you take the time to study the college textbook like manual that terrifies the MPC crowd and other kids. This is all you will need to get jaws to drop and pull off complete productions. 32 tracks of sequencing and multi layer programs help get past the 24 voice limitation(no one complained in early 90ies), its all in the programing. Inputs and outputs are extremly good quality even compared to modern converters and even though there is no wordclock the fact that there is two digital ins can compensate in a clever setup. A true workstation/swiss army knife type of machine. The build quality is good if you are patient and careful. EVERYTHING in this plane of existance breaks down eventualy but compared to some other manufacturers products it is very good. I saw Pink Floyd use them live on the Division Bell tour in 94 and they emulated old analouge EMS and Moog extremely well along with acoustic sounds. I just recently acquired a K2600. Very Professional line of products.

I've been using synthesizers for years and I've used all types: analog, pcm, vector,FM,wavetable,VA,you name it.However, I recently took a peek at getting a k2000 v3, so I did.The synth engine is pretty incredible..the algorithmic structure reminds me of a DX7 with the capabilities of a monstrous modular synth, it's a great keyboard for film music and Industrial, now hear comes the part that pains me..having issues with my floppy drive and questions about the in-depth features, I phoned Kurzweil about help fixing my problem and let me tell you this:'they are a bunch of little shits who treat you as if you're wasting their time by calling them and they treat you as if your'e a moron for asking them a question about their own product.'They have an awful Tech Support Team. But as far as this keyboard goes, it's a great choice for film, industrial, orchestral, and some ambient. So of you get one ,make sure you test the floppy drive, and everything on it you have had better learned because Kurzweil doesn't care abouy you needing their help, they only care about you buying their keyboards.

Ok. I guess I cant anything but my own love for this damn thing. The K2000 v.3 is still the best value for your money even today AD 2006. I am a musician/composer in the ambient/electronic genre and I have owned tons of gear(sound familiar) i/e var. EMU modules, Roland JV, Alesis, Yamaha etc. None of these even comes close to the warmth, complexity and personality as the K2000. I hate to read manuals because Id rather be making music, well the K2000 is very deep the manuals like an medical dictionary but if you take a little time you'll find it very intuitive(unlike the Yamaha gear!). I have the version with the extra Orchestral Eprom and built in hard disk all very usefull I might add. All I can say is I have a huge lilbrary at the tips of my fingers both synthesized and sampled, I mean everything from fat Moog leads to sampled silver flutes complete with vibrato! Gripes...the display, 24 voice polyphony, the pram is flakey. But the synth has got and easy interface and sound that is full of bottom end. I wish I could have known about the quality of this machine years ago.I use mine in conjunction with my Ensoniq SQ-80, Wavestation and TR Rack. A perfect combo for almost any kind of composing! Now.. go out and get one!

Deep! Incredible engine, great sampling, lots of support material still available for a 'board first introduced 15 years ago (that says something in itself). Get one, you won't regret it.
