I fired up the k2000vp after sitting unused for about the last 4 years . it still works perfectly . and it doesnt seem to have really dated . the presets are not that great apart from some nice basses , leads , pads and atmosphere/efx . but really this synths excels at being programmed and incredibly complex patches can be had with some mild effort . considering the k2 design is now 13 years old its quite remarkable . even specs wise its not bad , 96 ocsillators , 64mb sampling , sequencer , efx , insane synth engine .

my display is a bit dark but the lcd on the k2000 was always dim , hence switching the new k25/26 design displays thats the only thing even remotely wrong with it .

a true classic . we will be emulating this in software for years to come when all the hardware units have finally died

Recently I looked at what people were selling these things for and I was dumbfounded. I guess nowadays people only want synths that have the a basic 4 stage envelope! FUNs are cool as hell, modulating everything with anything is cool as hell, stacking 32 DCOs on a drum program is cool AND stupid as hell. I love my k2000s. You can do any stupid thing imaginable with it. It is a programmer's wet dream.

Analogy: This thing is like a scientific calculator where all other synths are those dumb free things you get at the bank. It even kinda looks like a scientific calculator.

This is an update to my previous entry.

Sweetwater Sound gets high grades for taking care of the situation where my K2000 needed work after they had it the first time and it still wasn't right. They paid for all shipping for the unit to be returned to them and my sales rep., Paul Rowan, actually took the unit home to test it and found an additional problem that none of us even knew existed. They had told me to give them a chance to make the keyboard perfect and it appears that they did just that.

Now that it's back in my studio, I can honestly say that this is the primary keyboard out of the bunch (which includes an Alesis QS6.1, Roland XP-30, and an E-mu PK-6). The sound quality of this 1994 unit is magnificent and the amount of features it has will keep me busy for quite some time.

For my money, the guitars are really outstanding, and while I prefer the Alesis piano sample over this particular Kurzweil's, it's still pretty good.

So good, in fact, that I've decided to add a Kurzweil KME-61 to my setup in addition to this unit.

If you can find a K2000 and you're willing to have the Sweetwater people go through it, then it's worth the investment. It's a lot of keyboard for the money.

I bought my K200VPB (B for B stock; the unit was refurbished by Kurzweil and then sold with a 90 warranty through Sweetwater Sound for $750) and it immediately became my primary keyboard.

This 1994 unit sounds fantastic --- most notably the guitar sounds are amazing. The piano is horrible, but in general, the other sounds make up for it.

Unfortunately, the unit had problems within a week of it being here, which turns out to be common with K2000's --- the Mix output tends to die on 1 channel and even after the unit went back to Sweetwater for repair, the problem repeated itself once it came back, and had to be sent out again where it is as of this writing.

I've since talked with several other people who tell me that their K2000's also had similiar problems and that getting the units repaired became an exercise in patience.

As for me, I'm trying to trade it in on a Kurzweil KME61 --- the sound quality of these Kurzweil units has sold me. In the case of the K2000VPB, it just might be that the unit is old enough so that it can't be properly repaired.

I Found My K2000S-V3 at a pawnshop. It had two broken keys so bought it for $350.00. Man! This is the best envestment I ever made. After dealing with Prophet 5's, Dx7's, W 30's, and the such, I have finally found the keyboard of my dreams and can rest in program and sound heaven. What a GREAT machine. Take my advice.......GET ONE!!!
