The Korg M1 is still able to produce many good sounds including pads, which is what I use it for. The sequencer is difficult to use and I dont use it now. Get the EX version if you can. It was a big synth in the nineties being used by people like The Cure, The KLF, Aqua Blue Music (pad sounds), The Orb, Bomb The Bass, Plastikman. Still worth a listen and a little play.

After all these years it is still a powerful and impressive synth. In multi-mode, sounds go in all directions. 8 sounds independently doing their thing. Some synths can do it via midi. This can do it in real time. 8 sounds stacked together. There were no compremises with this synth. It was a top end product. Great keys and built like a nuclear bunker.
Pads and leads are especially good. The best envelope control I have seen on a synth. 2 independent and totally programmable effects units. Some sounds are horribly familiar. You have to work not to sound like everyone else, but the synth is capable enough.

The Korg M1 is my 1st.& only synth. I enjoy editing the sounds of the M1. The brass sounds are thick, the bass is crunchy, I love mixing the piano and strings together. Also panning the patches to full stereo. I use it w/an external sequencer MC-50. The only thing i hate is the weight. The M1 never lets me down. I've learnd how to use the M1 from my freinds who are in the music industry. I'm proud to have this classic synth. Here the M1 cost 69,000 thousand bucks that was 1991. Now it cost around 35,000 w/c is not bad. I wish i could find some Rom cards out there.

The Korg M1 is what I call a "lukewarm" workstation. It has it's own set of rules and capabilities. It can actually produce some swell sounds. If you're looking to get one-minute glistening pads, with filters and choruses sweeping in all directions, forget it, go get a Kawai K5000W. This synth doesn't work that way. It has a nice array of meaty and pad sounds, and the sequencer is fairly impressive. If you're a hobbyist and like Korg, buy an M1 and start melting.

Having the Korg M1 as my 1st. and only synth for 13 years is great. i like the sounds the M1 packs. it can emitate Van Halens Jump Brass. This is a very powerfull synth once you learn to edit it. Up to now it still looks new. I used it to make minus one songs, sometimes for gigs, i also use it in church. The M1 never lets me down. Very user friendly. The M1 looks simple but very powerfull. The down side is it's too heavy for me to carry since i don't own a car.
