When all's said and done...the M1 can always dish up the sound you want. Everyone plays one. Which synth gets played the most in your set up. Not the mini moog, not the prophet 5, not the latest Roland. No, it's the good ol' M1. If ever a synth was worth 5 marks it was the M1. The best selling synth of all time. The most playable synth of all time. Better than a va, better than analogue...better than a D50.... the M1. Sold more...played more ....nuff said!

I've been using an M1 since 10 years, and I agree to the fact that it didn't age well. IMHO it has many completely useless sounds, I think that many patches impressed when the synth was just released, but were totally useless. On the opposite side, many Roland synths had and have lower quality but much more useful sounds. I still use, anyway, M1 for piano sound (not very good but well working in a band), violins (very good) and voices (very good). Some other good sounds are vibe, some percussions, some classical instruments. Forget it for synth solo sounds, slap basses, drum sounds (good but boring), organs, electric pianos. BTW, this keyboard is a tank! It still is well in shape although I made everything with it.

The M1 is a great machine. That is why it is still used both in studios and live all over the world. The sounds are of a high quality and the programming is comprehensive and easy to master. I cannot agree with the report that the sounds are dated. It is a synthesizer...you create and fashion new sounds don't you? Because this is so easy to do on the M1 will explain why it is still widely used so many years after it was last produced. The keyboard is great and the build quality is top notch. I've owned and played my M1 for about ten years and it has never let me down. I was recently encouraged to sell it. It took me a few minutes playing of the gorgeous pads I've loaded from cards and programmed into to realise that this would be a big mistake. It has a lot more presence than my XP50 and D50. The strings are just plain beautiful, especially when played in fifths. In multi mode you can stack sounds to create highly sonorous and complex timbres. The sequencer is a bit of a waste of time, but at least it's there! This is a classic keyboard that will still be highly used and regarded long after more modern, faddish keyboards have been forgotten. I remember reading an article about the M1 some years after it was diccontinued. It said that Korg were a little upset by the report that the M1 would still out sell just about any synth on the market if they were to reintroduce it. Doesn't that tell you something!

The M1 is a classic Synth! Some say that the sounds are becoming dated, but that will be the case of any synth in time. It has classic sounds which make it one of the number 1 classics, still being used in many set-ups, including Rick Wakeman. True, it has aged compared to the technology the Trinity and triton offer, such as SCSI, but I would never part with it, I have had it 9 years and still love it!! Used with computer sequences the Combi's can add to the warmth and richness. Happy playing. Steve
