The M1 was my first keyboard. I bought it used in 1990 and I started playing with it. I used it with my former band in many concerts and for a demotape. Then I difn't use it for some time, because I bought a Korg 05R/W and then some other things. In 1997 I put up a little studio and with the help of the Internet I discovered lots of new sound and re-considered the sonic capability of the M1. The only problem I've had with the synth are the buttons...sometimes you have to push them hard to make them work. I opened it and cleaned. The problem is not more or less solved. I think that the M1, after all these years, is still a valuable synth. It's a very good one to start playing and sequencing with. Now I dont' use it really often in my music, but I think I would never sell it. My first love into syhts...

Although the keyboard action leaves a lot to be desired (anyone else feel this way), the M1 is still a powerful synth! Pick one up and junk all the factory presets. Get in there and program up your own sounds and you'll find yourself with a great sounding synth. Thick pads, glassy/breathy timbres...it's all there if you're willing to dig into the synth.
Forget the sequencer though. I treat my M1 as a synth (as opposed to a workstation) and find that it delievers the goods for me in my studio setup.
If you can pick one up used for $600 or so, definitely do it. It's worth it.

I have had the M1r since it first came out, and have found it to be very reliable, easy to use and soncially pleasing. Some have called it 'out dated', but the glory of a sample based synth is that any sound can be created with new samples. I have a couple of PCM cards, and everytime I plugged one in, I though I had a new synth! (those cards seem to be hard to come by nowadays). Still I haven't been able to part with it even though I've been repeatedly tempted. the buttons break, the sequencer is just for curiosity, and the battery will die- but the usefulness lives on and on....

the M1 is as valuable as a synth or workstation as ever. the sounds are all entirely repairable if you just take the time and do it. to be fair it isnt GM so as a desktop multimedia synth it is a bit outdated. but to play and sequence out of, you could do a lot worse. i have 4 albums out, and nobody has complained about the synth sounds, they are mostly the m1ex i have had from the start. if you have a choice between a new casio or psr yamaha, or a used korg m1, go for the m1!!!

The KORG M1 is a holy instrument. Its keyboard is wonderfull and His sounds are very warm. My M1 resets itself once in a while and that really sucks, but it's a God, so what can I do? Right, love it!
