Cheapo "Simmons" for kids, was great fun then and a source of sample fodder for £10 now. mod it to hell and if you blow it, throw it and buy another for £10.. Mattel made some great fun cheap versions of expensive instruments, the Optigon was the Kids Mellotron and this is the Kids SDS5 (;-).

This is a cool little toy... the drum pads trigger snare, hihat and two toms. The toms are tune-able and you can manipulate the pitch of toms while playing to get a really uh, you know... not to sound trendy, but for lack of a better word "electro(?)" sound. There is a footswitch jack to trigger the kick drum, I'm not sure if Mattel ever actually made this. Without the footswitch, it seems you can only turn on or off a regular thumping kick drum pattern and control it's tempo. Kind of limited, but sometimes limitations force you to be more... creative -right? I was unable to get a really clean signal out of it (surprise!) lots of backround noise and hiss. I don't know if other Synsonics are like that.
