The thought that this thing will become even more expensive astounds me. This is a very limited and unreliable offering. Incomplete envelopes and LFO features mean that it can't be viewed as THE classic synth. THE classic synth should be one which totally defines what the future of synths will be. The Prophet 5, for example, defined the analogue polysynth. I think the ARP Odyssey, with proper envelopes, LFO and ring mod provision is the classic monosynth. It does more, sounds as good/better and is much cheaper.

It is THE classic monosynth, so no discussion there. However, it is somewhat limited in nature as it can not do a hell of a lot, except for those warm, phat monophonic tones that we all know and love. Love it or leave it, it sounds great and is also a collectors item (this one was the first, remember?). If you have an early version '71-72 model in good condition, keep it that way. It's worth big $$$ already, and this will increase in time. Most minis around have taken a beating (this was, after all, a favourite live board in the seventies). I just want to mention...I actually replicated that phat minimoog-bass sound to perfection on my @Juno and it has DCO so stable tuning! What I'm saying is...there are synths out there that can replicate it's rather basic tone, the modulation abilities are limited, even if it has those 3 osc. Like I said, love it or leave it.

As time rolls on, the mm looks and sounds less and less attractive. The sounds are a cliche. Tuning is rediculas and every switch on breathes fear into you. Will it or won't it work? The feature list is limited and the 'great' keyboard and control set up look less and less great with every new synth that turns up. The mm is more about image than substance. The polymoog is going the same way. I saw one guy descibe that as legendary! Can you believe that! The mm's low pass is sweet. The envelopes lack depth to make sounds beyond the usual mm fare. I guess the one good sound is enough for most.

Steve a hobbyist user from USA writes:
I bought mine back in 1990 for $140 from a guy who was moving. I sold it last year for $1800. This synth is highly overrated. I was my first synth. It was very easy to program and sounded great with a little reverb and delay. The oscillators were very powerful, but not so as my Mono/Poly which I preferred. It is rather a little too "one trick pony" for me to justify owning.

This is one synth that I will never wish that I had back. I bought it because I loved Gary Numan and it did do that well.

Yes it actually has to be tuned occasionally. Yes, modern digital synths have more features. Yes, there are many of us fans that love it. Why? Because it is perfect at what it does. Keep in mind that the digitals, virtuals, and modern versions (Voyager) all seek to come close to this classic fat sound. So is it really overhyped?

Modern standard gear like the Access Virus are just emulating Moog patches to get these sounds.(others are just recordings of moogs, read: samples) Why not go back to the source. Hardly anyone actually edits patches on digitals, just use them as glorified organs. One has to actually synthesize sounds on the mini, slower but tons more fun and creative than just scrolling through hundreds of canned patches. My guess is that most who don't like the mini, don't really know how to get the sounds they want out of it (if this is not you don't be offended, just my overall impression reading comments here).

I have owned lots gear over the years, each exciting in its own way when new. Most of what I've bought since my mini (~1979) has been sold and I'll bet that most others with Access, novation, etc will similarly sell theirs in a few years and move on to the next hot box. I'll also bet that nobody will be arguing about the greatness of those boxes in 10-30 years. I have a feeling that we will still be talking about the minimoog, I know I will.

The voyager sounds a little brighter and thinner to me in side by side comparison, but love the new features on it.
