In 1987 I bought my first synthesizer, a Korg Polysix in the mistaken belief I could get it to sound like a Minimoog. Not even close, not even in Unison mode. A short time later I bought a Minimoog, also for $200 from it's original owner (I just missed the chance to pick up a CS-80 from the same guy for only $400 by about an hour). The Minimoog did the trick though. Everything I had hoped for and more.
With the Minimoog I think there will be some people who get it and some people who don't, and that's OK. Sure there are a million things it CAN'T do. No it's not as reliable as a kitchen appliance. So what? But it does what it does unlike anything else, even close imitators like the SE-1. For those who love it, and know how to get the most out of it for what they do with it, the machine is unbeatable. If you don't get it, don't bother. Nuff said.
I'll NEVER sell mine, but if anyone wants a mint Polysix...
For the guy who asked about Thomas Dolby, I believe he used either a Multimoog or Micromoog for much of his "Golden Age of Wireless" synth bass sound - it was definately NOT a Minimoog. The other synths he used at the time were the Roland Jupiter 4/6/8 and PPG 340/380 system which was used to trigger Simmons (SDS-5?) sounds and did other things like the goofy bass sound in "Wind Power" for example.

I have Minimoog D 1974. I agree with last two reviews, this is wonderful instrument. Bass is mind bloving (Air - Sexyboy). I also have Pro~One which is great for lead...Minimoog will be remembered in anoter 30 years, unlike many ungood synths today..

Well the only thing that might come close to sounding as low and nasty might be a Roland SH-2, i just love it's huge bass sound! But i the Mini is still KING in my setup!

A nice old synth. However, not as good as an Odyssey and very expensive.

As with everything you need skill, patience and creativity to use the Mini`s potential. I find it scaring what one user said - that a deamon lives inside that thing. Maybe nearer the truth than most people expect... You need a lot of moral and will power to be able to deal with all the electronics on the market nowadays. Otherwise you get possesed by it. If anyone want to share experiences of addiction to electronic gear (which can often be nearly as painful as "real" addiction, then please contact me). I have had two Minis - and it is true, it can be a great tool if YOU stay in control and put YOUR creativity and human touch into it - or it can leave you drained and empty, if you imagine that the music should be coming from this box. I found some very unusual sounds in my MINIs, half by luck, half through my programming skills.
