Like a classic Martin gGuitar, Hammond B3, Fender P-Bass, Marshall amp, Les Paul, etc. - the Minimoog has a limited range. BUT, like those instruments, what it does in that range is exceptional and amazing. A Mini that does not stay in tune or sound good is NOT right and should be fixed. (Try playing a Stratocaster with bad strings and out of tune - not a fair way to judge it). The SE-1 is very good, too. Most other old analogs, even Moogs, do not have its sound quality. One always has to pay the most money for that last 10% of quality. If you don't care about that, do not spend your money.

I love my Mini. No problem with tuning and it never let me down yet - after all these years! I don't agree with some previous reviewers about it being overpriced. If you're real musician and care about your tracks sounding best, then price should not be an issue. (Why do people spend $$$$ for ProTools? There're systems much cheaper than ProTools and practically do the same job!) But if your ear can't tall the difference bet. Minimoog and M1 then you should not get a Mini, but stick with ROMplers... 'nuf said! PEACE!

ahh..the minimoog,the bass king..well to be honest, everything said about it is true..great basses,great worm leads(great glide),freaky noises,cool filter leads,goes out of tune,breaks easy,overpriced by far,great analog punch...if you think your sound would benefit from a mini,then go buy one,if you want to save money and have midi,stable tuning and great basses-then buy a juno-106 or a jp8...the mini has its own sound and feel within a song,its hard for some synths to compare..but just dont try to knock that it isnt a great synth..its just not really an all-arounder..and remember to that it is a classic(it became that somehow??maybe because it does sound so good eh??)..so trying to compare a 1970 model to a 2002 model is kinda silly..but i must admit the prices are getting crazy!!..maybe one would consider a studio electronics se-1 or midimoog instead of a mini..now youll have a mini sound and a new model...

The minimoog is an amazing musical instrument, it has a unique warmth and "presence" that does NOT "sitt nicely in a mix".... The third oscillator is really usefull, the mini wouldnt be able to produce the famous bass sounds without it. I use my mini for bass and all sorts of leads, often with those unique waveforms and OSC-filter FM. The only synth that is warmer that I have played is my REV2 Prophet 5 with the SSM2040 filter. It lacks bass end when resonant though.
Yes, the mini sounds amazing , BUT ,it has a very warm, soft and mellow sound that is a bit tiring sometimes. It always sound minimoog, early rock or Kraftwerk style. You HAVE to have a rough MS-20,Odyssey,SH101 or some BPF synth next to it to add som sharpness and screams or you feel like a ROCK musician :)

As I expect with many of us my first experience with the Moog sound was through the talent of Walter Carlos. After hearing that recording all I knew was I WANTED ONE! that was 1970. fast forward to 1992. I was just minding my own business, repairing and building pipe organs, when, while visiting a man to look at a large electronic organ, I noticed a metal chassis with a black faceplate and bunches of black knobs. I pulled out the cardboard box to look and he said, "oh, that is just an old Minimoog, just junk" and proceeded to pick it up by the keyboard cables. It took almost no effort to get him to GIVE it to me! Some repairs and a new leatherette case to replace the missing original and I have a fully operational Moog! Oh, and by the way it seems that it is the tenth one off the production line! Check out http://home.earthlink.net/~marlinmackley/minimoog.html for photos.
