I bought my first Mini-moog back in 1977. I was more than pleased with the thick sounds, after listening to ELP, YES, and Triumvirat. However, the drawbacks that I found with this piece of gear, and using it in concert, was that it was a bear to keep in tune. Also, after any changing of the oscillators, it would have to be retuned, Also, fluctuations in the power of the building could also drive its owner wild. Another drawback, especially after the light instruments made today, was that, with an Anvil case, it weighs a ton! But, it has a thick sound and so far, no other instrument I've used does sound thicker. Put 2 Mini-moogs together and you have unlimited combinations of sounds. I bought my second Mini-moog in 1983 and paid $500 for it. So, you can find them cheap, if you look.

The minimoog is one of a kind. Nothing has cooler bass sounds, sounds warmer, or raises sooo many eyebrows when I haul it on stage. I'm a bassist by trade but collect old analog synths and the moog is a joy to own. the ultimate creative tool with a few obviouse drawbacks. New samplers are more precise but not as FUN and raw to work with....The minimoog will never die...

There is only one Minimoog. It can only be bettered at its own game by the big Moog modular systems, and then not by much. But it can *almost* be equalled by the (much cheaper and more common) Prodigy. There were only 12000 actual-original Minimoogs made (According to Dr. Bob Moog himself) so there are simply not enough to go around. The design changed also over the years.. Mine is a '74 series "D", and makes much use of op-amps. Others? They need regular maintainance/cleaning to switches pots etc. HINT: DO NOT EVER - I REPEAT - EVER - let your engineer friend spray the keyboard contacts with a cleaner-lubricant. I did, 16 years ago, and my Mini is still suffering! The stuff makes dust stick to the contacts and must be avoided. This weekend I have the ritual strip and clean of the keyboard. I'm going to try isopropyl alchohol to clean the springs and bus bars.. This should work, then future cleans will be just a blast of compressed air. If you like sound. Get one. If you can't get one, get a Prodigy. I find the best stand for a Minimoog is a Hammond Organ. ;-)
