Uh, the Liberation DOES have a mod wheel. It's to the right of the pitch ribbon. You also have to set up the front panel for it to work, check the section on the far left.
I like my Lib, it does have a limited palette but its specialty is its expression capabilities. You get the pitch ribbon, which IMO is far easier to use horizontally than vertically as on the Micro/Multimoog, you get mod wheel, you get a filter wheel which opens the filter ALL ON THE LEFT HAND GRIP. Add keyboard pressure aftertouch sensitivity which you can do pitch bend, open the filter, modulation (in place of the mod wheel), and sweep of OSC2 when it's sync'd to OSC1. The last mode is my favorite.
Don't buy a Liberation expecting a Minimoog sound, it'll do the basic dual ramp lead sound but not much else in the Minimoog department. You gotta go beyond that. The expression tools on this thing are the key. This is not a tool for non-musicians looking for instant gratification, you have to PLAY this thing to appreciate it.
If you're a keyboard player who appreciates the expressive nuances that guitar players or sax players use in their phrasing (pitch bending, modulation, control of timbre), this is your axe.
The filter is limited compared to my Minimoog or my Memerymoog and it doesn't have an external input. The noise source is limited and has that "heartbeat" defect, the polyphony stuff is a horrid square wave organ routed through the filter.
It does have a ring modulator which can be fun, but it's not as flexible as an ARP Odyssey. The oscillators sound pretty good and are really stable, sync mode is really fun if you set it right and combine keyboard pressure with modulation, you can simulate a guitar feedback, it's great with FX!
The Lib does have CV and trigger out (no input), and the pitch bend, mod wheel, and pressure signals are included in the CV - nice. The CV output is scalable for interfacing to non-Moog synths.
Again, if you're a player and want an expressive axe, this is really good; if you want a Minimoog or instant gratification, look elsewhere.
