The opus-3 is a nice string/organ synth, but due to it's overly trendy MOOG name it fetches ridiculous amounts of money for a very limited synth. To me these are fine synths, but are way way over valued, for a good price they're excellent I just wouldn't pay the $400-600 for one it's simply not worth it. I'd probably sample it anyway.
For more bang for your buck and much much better string sounds see either the Arp Solina String Ensemble or the Arp Quartet/Siel Orchestra, both of those to me have a much more ethereal tone, which has yet to be replicated -- if you see one of these ARP's check them out they're both super cool. For reference listen to New Order's "In a lonely place" the bside to the "Ceremony" single (their first single) and you'll get a pretty good idea of what to expect from the ARP string ensembles.
Just don't but this synth for the MOOG name and expect a mini it's not you will be generally disappointed.

Well to update my usage on the Opus 3 it has become a very commonly used sound on our recordings and will be on stage with us this next coming months Im even of thinking to get the Chourus delay slider fixed. Watch for "Blast Away" at your local clubs such as the Lumpy Gravy on Feb.13, 99. This sweet creature will be prominentlydisplayed on the top teir over the prophecy and DSS-1. We are ready to go!

Great for strings and brass. Organ is ok but not great. It's not worth the high price tag that it's been drawing these days. I bought and sold mine for $350 but if I wanted to get one again I wouldn't pay more than $150. It's extremely limited and is probably not what you're looking for if you like the minimoog sound.

After playing around with my newly purchased Opus, I have decided that it is more versatile than its cracked up to be. If you use the 16' on the organ thru the VCF, you can get some very nice bass sounds. My particular opus' string section does not work, so if anyone out there knows an easy way to fix it without using a special technician, lemme know at DexterLabs@aol.com. as far as the preset brass goes, however, its very cheesy but the high footages make a very goofy sounding lead. the one thing i wish it has is a keyboard glide-like controller, but im not sure how that'd work with the poly. i find it to be a perfect partner of the mg-1.

Here is a great story. I was helping a neighbor move one day last year. after that he told me if I wanted a piano. I said sure why not? So we go to his room and I'm expecting to see a rotting, out of tune wooden beast. but instead he goes behind his bed and pulls out a MOOG OPUS 3. it was dusty and had one slider(chourus Rate)broken. I told him how much? He said "Nothing,your such a nice guy,just have it!" it works perfectly and sounds great but it's heavy. well all my stuff is heavy. I have seen it for about three hundred bucks on the market and I personally think that's too much. It also does a good organ and poly brass sound.
