The Nova is a flash rom based super analog synth with a very easy INSTANT gratification based control board and Vocoder section(40 bands!).I won't bore you with the same details of it's PROs.Instead I will warn and enlighten on the NOVA laptop synth weaknesses!I bought mine used with OS 4.0 and in mint condition.It worked for about 4 months but one day it just stopped responding to any button presses and instead I now have a $400 paperweight.The unit turns on but stays on the Nova OS loading screen and all the buttons are dead except for the Distortion/Eq button which instead blinks rapidly but also does not respond to presses.I left this unit on in my studio for over a week and when I came back to play..it was dead.I have left it on longer before with no problems.Any clues!??It DOES respond to OS upgrade and OS RESET,CPU check and MIDI transmit functions(CMOS BIOS type features)when I press a button and then POWER UP.It will not respond once the function has finished executing!So..What would I rate this synth?Well,when it was functional it would have been a 4 since it does sound harsher than a Yamaha VA but it is so powerful it is too good to pass up..It is dead for no reason however so it gets a 1 due to unreliable function!I am amazed this has not been mentioned before!No,upgrading does not help.

ATTENTION NOVA USERS!!!!!!!!
Go download a program called Borgstation. It's a librarian for the nova that has a random bank generator! The sounds I am getting out of this are amazing in ways I could never have conceived through normal programming. This program showed me the true sonic power of the nova.

The nova can be as simple or as complex as you make it. you can get great results very quickly from it but with a bit of work you can get a lot more deep into the sounds and create some amazing sounds.
The arpeggiator is amazing. the pads sound awesome and the basses rumble.

Great machine, I love it. I picked one up for 200$ and haven't got any regrets so far. Although I picked up a nord modular for the same price and, although it's not the same and you shouldn't compare machines like these, I do think the modular is a better buy. Especially if you like programming, but if you don't like programming a synth you wouldn't be able to get the most out of your nova anyway.
