This machine will live up to all the rave reviews here. I just bought one to complement my otherwise largely modular set up of a Moog IIIP and 2 Arp 2600s. Even against the Moog the OBXa holds its own for richness and depth. Its modulation capabilities are actually very rich, thanks to its brilliant ergonomic design. Tom Oberheim said the OBXa was the last of his synths to have the good old sound. I still can't tell if it is as intensely vital as my friend's OBX; regardless its awesome performance-oriented features would more than compensate. Many agree that analogs got less gritty and real as they evolved with more convenience features; in part this is because engineers found more cost-effective ways to achieve same functions, yet with sacrifice of sound. The OBXa is one of the few synths that still enjoyed the power of the early days, while sporting some quite advanced features (memory, keyboard split); and midi retrofits are available! Obxa sounds exactly like a big train chugging down the track. Kinda like landing a big smallmouth bass too. Has got some nice countryside sounds as well.Sounds like a hot gal in heat like a minimoog does. Can sound like a sunset but not a colorful as a p5. Don't take it to a tech in the hills or you will find out why.

Okay, I've been playing around with the OBXa for a week now and I've rediscovered TONE! I challenge anyone to tell me that in stacked mode, this board doesn't absolutely blow them away! It's rich in layers of harmonic analog chunk. The bass is not only fat but dimensional. The strings are full and sound satisfying without any external effects or treatments. The only downside is that this thing is huge and heavy. MIDI would be nice, actually, it would be damn nice. This is a great synth!

I just bought one on ebay and anxiously await it's arrival! I owned an OBSX years ago and since have owned a few other analogs and a VA. Nothing cuts through the mix and provides such on the fly sound diversity as the Oberheim. The Moog Prodigy has fat bass but it's too subtractive to dial in changes on a whim. I love the patch buttons on the Oberheim because you can change gears instantly during composition. I agree that many of the patches are completely dated. When you find the ones that work, however, for your style, you can really express yourself in ways you cannot connect with on other synths. I cannot comment on the OBXA yet, but from what I'm reading, I gather this will blow away my already highest regards.

Obxa? i own one. people who compare this synth with other synths like the jp8 cant really compare the both cuz they both sound amazing and they both sound different. i can compare both cuz i own both. let me tell u the obxa is a synth u would love. and a jp8 is another. but if i had to pick one i would pick the jp8. if any body out has a obxa retofited with midi please let me know how good it is thanks.
