This and the OB-8 sound great; some differences between them but far more similar sounding than different. Excellent bass sounds on both, those who don't think so either don't know how to program or don't realize how many punchy basslines they're responsible for ie Alexander O'Neil, SOS Band, "What Have You Done for Me Lately" Janet Jackson (OB-8), are you listening guys? Thn bass? HUGE is more like it. Quite comparable to Prophets for some sounds, not surprising given that they share some of the same chips, with the Prophet having a sharper sound, the OBs being fatter, more Moogish character. On many records i can't tell whether it's a Prophet or Oberheim, especially on leads or pads.

I wouldn't worry too much about repairs, i used to then realized that techs invariably find parts from an increasingly diverse no. of online sources..

Until recently, the Oberheim OBs were always cheaper to buy than Prophets, which was bizarre to me; now that's changed and the prices are similar. Build quality on Oberheim stuff is quite good actually, mabye the most reliable of the American manufacturers.

they sure did eddy seemed to like oberheim, obxa (1984)with Dave and with sammy the ob8 (1986).Butter sweet synth had mine for about 3 years there pretty cheap for a true classic the only problem with the old ob<s i have is you sort of need plyers to swist the knobs.I think van halen used the Dsx in jump it sounds a little synced??

I love the OBXa, Great sounds! good keyboard action! That's what I look for in a synth!

Didn't Van Halen use one on JUMP?

Jay, I agree mate. This aint no Prophet, Jupiter or Matrix 12 (hahaha!) It's a good poly that makes some lush and buzzy stuff. It lacks bass frequencies as you say and it thin for sweeps and murky pads. Oberheim build quality is poor as well and this is a good example of that.

Really warm sounding synth, but sounds too dated for me. I owned one for 2 years and still don't understand the 'great bass' comments. The synth has a 'vacant' thin sound to me most of the time. For what it does well, it does REALLY well: low rumbling pads, weird fx, natural sounds like organy stuff. Not a good machine for modern electronic like trance. NOT better than a Jupiter 8 or prophet 5 as I've been hearing here. The Obx-A has no chunk!
