for me the xpander is the best mix between an individual music instrument and an experimenting tool. powerfull sounding and a userinterface that is much better than from todays digital controlled synths. i learn a lot about modulation from him.

differences between the m1000 and the xpander: the xpander have VCOs,(m1000 DCOs)you hear it!!, more modules, 6 CV/Gates, multimode filter, and a great interface with 3 dispays, and for me its more made for programming than matrix 6 an 1000.

spend some time with it and have fun;-))

I just have to agree with LarsHans on this. Dont buy this synth - it is too hyped up. The envelopes are too slow, the architecture isnt that special - just two oscillator going into multimode filter(allthough15 types), pluss some "fancy" modulation, that is best suited for evolving, pad-oriented sounds, but dont expect anythibg too special, for this the sound-architecture is just too simple. For programming you'll end up using SoundDiver anyway, so the nice design counts for zero. Also, its much too big, allmost one meter sideways. I had mine for about 6 months - If you want this synth buy instead a couple of Matrix-1000's. You'll only miss the Multimode filter, but you'll have more possibilities, its much smaller, pluss almost the same sound for the fraction of the price. Better yet, buy a Nord Modular.

it's many things but most importantly it sounds excellent. This machine most definetly deserves preservation. I own a Z1. which is fantastic but has a glassy digital feel, the xpander makes the analogue sounds you wish the z1 made. Of course the z1 makes a greater variety of types of sounds. An andromeda will come off second best in the mid range sounds against this machine. The matrix for editing is not as hard as first thought (just add those ramps lfos etc in...max 20 though). Six note poly should not be a cause for concern, it sounds good enough (more than, to require no unison on the sounds i've been stuffing with in the last 4 months. Though the sound is wide, it is not fat like the jupiter 8 (that's wide and fat). You can add patches though i've had problems with sounddiver (due to the operator i'm sure).

As far as polyphonics are concerned this should be allowed to live.

Another HYPED DATED Synth.

I bought this synth to do analogue FM sounds, but my surprise what that no sine was available from the osc ,only with the filter so you will loose that wonderful filter for filtering your sound.

The envelopes were digital and slow or bad(to my taste) The square wave was maybe the worst and unmellow I have ever heard, saw was pretty good

Maybe the best versatile and best sounding Filter EVER , BP,HP LP.combos, wonderful Get a clone Doepfer A-107 for this) for filtering your sound.

That synth is with the ARP 2600 the most hyped and unusable for nowaday standard music ( I mean Detroit techno or real recording that sell more than 500 copies ) Buy a real modular,or Memorymoog, SEM,Jupiter instead .Or learn to program a DX7 to get modular or deep modulated sounds for your budget!

Dont pay more that 600 $ for this condemned to death synth. Hes prive is totally fake and HYPED.

The worst by far of my almost 40 synths I ever had

AVOID if you are into NOWADAYS MUSIC
