Great drum synth especially for those who like to program their own sounds. With multimode filters you can tweak the samples as you wish. Even only with white noise you can get hihats, kicks, weird noises etc. I managed to get many of the sounds Herbie Hancock used in his albums early 80's. Currently I feel that I don't need a sampler since I can program almost any drum sound I want and they are instantly available.

The sound quality is suberb, very clean and punchy. The only drawback is that if you use the individual outputs, you have to store the sound first to the user memory (128 patches). I have also a Roland R8 with 5 cards, but I use mostly the RM50.

Check for PCM cards for RM50

Hi I bought an RM-50 just after they were axed for a knockdown price, having read all the good reviews only a year or so before. I make Break-Beat / Drum & Bass toons, and give it top marks for the quality of sounds, filters (which you can record the movements of via midi mixer in cubase etc) and general editability. Also, from someone who's used to using a sampler, having a drum module with 1000 sounds onboard makes working a lot quicker. If you are looking for an RM-50 but are having trouble finding one, then the RY-30 is a good substitute, with the added advantage that it is a drum machine and not just a module. Same sounds as well, just less of them, and the same editing and filters Does anyone know of an RM-50 users site ?

It's sound very good but editing function is a bit troubesome. For example, its very easy to assign individual outputs for different voice like bass drum & snare at R5M (brand R). Can any one tell me a more simple way to edited the machine and save to the memory banks. Besides, I bought 5 extra sound cards like Dave W. & Peter R.'s. They provide PCM wave only but not a drum set as I can obtained from RY30. Jesus! I kept warning from the message " Can't edit.." when I want to ajust a simple parameter like pan pot. The manual is bad too. Honestly I like the machine, but...
