I just got a 505 and put it through its paces and found out why most hate the sounds. BUT, I think its the application, not the sounds. Okay, for industrial, techno, drum n' bass, etc..it sucks completely. But, for 80's cheeze synth-pop, it positively excels. I have one with the indiv. out mod and with a little distortion on the claps and bass kick you can pull out even some good gabber slams. So, if you want anything that sounds similar to the 808 or 909, go FAR away, but if you are looking for something with great cowbells and silly conga's for fun 80's stuff, go for it.

I wasn't too impressed with the sounds, as they're pretty dry sounding. Maybe with some fx. It's purely sample-based, no analog tweaking. I ended up getting a DR-550 for the same price ($150), because it has more and better sounds, but it would still be a pretty good drum machine for a beginner.

the sounds are terrible. really terrible. theres only a stereo output. the better sounds are available on the better sounding 707 (hihats, rim). so dont buy this for its sounds. however, as a sequencer it kicks arse. each drum sound can have a midi note number assigned to it, it can be programmed on the fly _even_ when its being synched. use it as a live sequencer for a synth, or like me use it as a x0x-style realtime programmer for a non-sequencer-capable beatbox (i use it on my drumstation, means i've basically now really got an 808 and 909 with onboard sequencers). its way better value as a sequencer than as a sound source. i'd buy it again if i saw one as cheap as i got it. score is for the _sequencer_. for its sounds its a 0 outa 5 i'm afraid.

just a note: the 505 is nothing like the 808/909, etc. It uses samples and
therefor sounds like real drums. Might be ok if you wanted to make non-electronic music but even then the samples are totally dry.
