Mixed feelings about the ax1...hate to spoil the love fest (all the other reviews in this column are so glowing) but i have had some problems with mine...i must admit that the keyboard fel and action are excellent....but the programming is impossible for an idiot like myself..the operations manual makes little sense to me but maybe its my stupidity....and the pitch started wavering and the solution was to take the screws out, so now it is stable but cant be moved...oy vey...also on mine the modulation is more than on off depending on your ' pushing forward' technique...but it doesnt compare to the yamaha kx5 which has a wheel but smaller (but managable) keys....

It is one very cool musical instrument, as I have learned it is more than just a controller. It's pitch ribbon permits bending notes in a way only impossible by using a joystick, don't even dream about accomplishing it on a pitch wheel. I tap, slide, hammer, do double-handed slides, and use 4 fingers from my left hand to do several fast swoops starting from the top. I can't play in my band without it anymore!! I did find programming it a bit hard (I'm the big-glowing-screen- everything-easy-to-access kind of guy). I gave up on the manual, not too explanatory for me. The keyboard is sort of light and the keys are shorter than the average (not TOO short, but shorter than my Korg 01/W's for example), but I do feel comfortable with it. I used to use it with a power supply, but then I discovered it just spoils the fun. Getting batteries was the best thing I could do. FREEDOM!!! If wireless MIDI systems were cheaper, I would surely get one, and fly away!!!!! Roland really shipped this one in the best moment, because I haven't seen anyone lately using a strap-on keyboard that wasn't an AX-1.

Just purchased one yesterday, and, boy, I wish I had this years ago!

The ease of use of this keyboard is great, and the freedom it gives you is a real rush. The AX-1 has 32 patches, so that you can program one preset change for the lower keyboard and another preset for a completely different module on the upper keyboard. Therefore playing your synth module with the upper keyboard, and playing your sampler with the lower keyboard is a snap. I'm still learning to control the amount of modulation applied by the expression bar. It seems to be all or none, and nothing in between like you get with a modulation wheel. All in all ---- a fine controller.
