Just got a cr5000 and it is awesome. cool analog sounds,great patterns and loose groove. i cannot understand why they are so cheap. You cannot sync this to din sync or midi but who cares just record it to hard disk add some reverb and your away. cool machine 5 out of 5

I love it. Of course it's no 808, but for $100 bucks it's pretty fab. Who needs Midi! The sounds are very Gary Numan - Telekon / Dance. It looks amazing too.

The Roland CR 5000 is definitley no 808 or 909 by any standards but it does have a very unique sound and interface all it own and it can still find use in any studio setup. I find it best for mellow, hiphop, r&b or ambient-trancey type grooves: its hihats, bongos and cowbell are classic Compu-Rhythm!The bass drum is alot like a 606 bass kick: short and boxy. The snare tends to sound most unlike the other tr series,less metallic and snappy, at times it sounds like a side stick or a flat tom-tom more than a snare. The way the kit is EQ'd will greatly affect how it sounds. The machine differs from its big brother the CR 8000 by lacking a programming function and programming buttons, no tempo indicator and most importantly NO DIN SYNC!! This is probably the machines biggest drawback,since you cannot combine it with the other DIN sync gear, however the unit does send 3 different types of external trigger out:8",16" and accent for different speed arpeggios on Roland synths that accept EXT clock in. With a non-midi Juno 6 and the Cr 5000 you can program a simple drum and bass groove that you can jam to. Only one mono output, no headphone jack, three different pedal inputs: stop/start, restart, register. You must accept the limitations of the instrument and use them to your advantage.The CR 5000 features 3 banks of 8 different preprogrammed patterns including the must have Samba,rhumba, mambo, merengue, waltz, foxtrot(MOSH!!) Bossa Nova, as well as Rock 1, 2, 3,etc, and one disco pattern!!You can drop basic arranged (16th or 1/4 notes)hihat, bongo and cymbal accents at will by pressing a button or alter the mix by adjusting the individual sound knobs for each sound. You also get a knob to select from 10 or so different preprogrammed fills which are triggered from a large button or with a knob that automatically places the fills on the end of the 4, 8, 12th etc measure. You also have a swing button that makes all the patterns swing like ragtime. The register parameter allows two different settings of rhythm arrangment (button settings) to be saved. Will it save the world! Will it be the centerpiece of your gear collection- NO! Will you use it for casual jamming when all you need is a simple- warm,rhythm pattern YES!!

CompuRhythm looks NICE, it really pleases the eye with its coloured buttons'n'stuff. Sounds all right, it has this really nice mellow analogue sound, too bad it isn't programmable. I've heard that with a little hacking you can build a triggering for it and play it manually with 'drumsticks' a la 70's Kraftwerk style... Is this true? How to do it?
