I love the sound of the CR78. The presets are great and most have been used on famous tracks over the years. I love the Hi Hat and Tamourine sounds. The only problem is writing your own beats, the tap switch came as a seperate item and it is hard to find one today. Famous users: Roxy Music, Blondie, Kontour, John Foxx and Phil Collins.

I happened to luck into this by a guy who gave it to me because he wasn't gonna use it. It's basically fantastic. That's all there is to say. It just sounds great.

I bought a Roland CR-78 in about 1987 when I was 12 or 13. I really wanted the 12 bit Roland TR707 (which came long after the 808 and 909) like the one that I was using in school because I wanted the most programmable real drum sounds availible. I couldn't afford the TR707 so a bought the CR78 second-hand. I really hated the synthetic sounds because it didn't take Sherlock Holmes to discover that my drummer was a box, Larry Holmes could have figured that out. Also I hated not having a quantise feature and found it a problem to program it in time. I sold it in the early 90's for 20 quid, thats 35-40 dollars for you Americans. Is it worth something now? IF YOU DON'T HAVE A WS1 FOR THE CR78 BUT STILL WANT TO PROGRAMME IT, THERES A PRETTY EASY WAY TO GET SOME VERY GOOD RESULTS. YOU NEED TO VISIT YOUR LOCAL ELECTRONICS SUPPLIER AND PURCHASE A "PUSH TO BREAK" SWITCH (A PUSH TO MAKE SWITCH WON'T WORK IN THE SAME WAY) WIRE IT UP TO A JACK PLUG AND MOUNT IT IN A SMALL ELECTRONICS HOBBY CASE. THEN INSERT IT IN TO THE REAR WRITE SWITCH SOCKET. SET THE RHYTHM ROLLING, SELECT THE MEMORY LOCATION YOU WANT TO STORE YOUR PATTERN IN AND FLICK THE WRITE SWITCH. YOU'LL NEED TO SLOW THE TEMPO TO ABOUT 4 AND WIND UP THE TAMBOURINE VOLUME,TO GET A GOOD METRONOME GOING, THEN JUST SELECT YOUR SOUND AND HIT ON THE BEAT.IF YOUR TIMING'S A BIT OFF PRESS THE CLEAR SWITCH AND GO AGAIN. A PUSH TO BREAK SWITCH IS PRETTY PRECISE AND WILL PLACE THE SOUND NICELY ON THE BEAT AS ITS STRUCK.(A PUSH TO MAKE SWITCH WILL PLACE THE BEAT AFTER IT HAS BEEN RELEASED, SO ITS NOT REALLY VERY PRACTICAL!) GOOD LUCK!!
