I just picked up a D-5 for $60. I really only wanted a controller but I got a whole lot more. I'm damned impressed with this thing and only had it a couple days. Great bass sounds, synth sounds, strings are awesome, and I would assume with a little tweaking some full lush pads too. Great arpeggiator, anyone know if it'll sync to midi? Love the bass sounds especially with a whole lot of resonance, and a nice squelchy disortion pedal. Definitly well worth the $60...

Yeah the D5 has a cheesy piano sound and some things about it are strange in the programming unless you have the PG10 connected to it.....then it is a snap to edit. The analog style waves are quite powerful after editing. The sounds are on a whole still better than what came out of the Kawai K1 or Yamah SY22 in the raw form. Having played all three synths, the D5 has proved to be a more expressive synth overall in performance.

the d-5 rocks in its own unique way. ive had my d-5 for a yaer and have used it as a midi controller to much affect. i bought mine for 180$ used at daddys junky music. for you crabby idiots out there who hate the albeit "funky" sound of its piano patches- i bought a yamaha piano module (i think its a pm 20) for 113$ and now i can wail a chick corea riff like a pro. this thing is more reliable than a k-car and its flute sounds kick some very major synth butt. my d-5 will remain with me and my korg karma for infinity... the d-5 is a good ol work horse that lacks the digital finesse of todays synths-but it still is a wonderful keyboard...

Too many people here are comparing the D5 with synths of today. It's 12 years old for God's sake and that's a long time in music technology. It uses the same sound architecture as the legendary D50 yet people pay fortunes for the second hand D50 and completely dismiss it's more affordable siblings. I still use the D5 today. IT IS EASY TO PROGRAM!!! Honest. I can't think how people find it tedious to program!!! Compared to the miriad of paramaters available on modern synths, the D5 is an absolute breeze! O.K., if you listened to the sounds today, many of them are very common and cliched, that's obvious. But it is very easy to get inside this machine and mess around with the various samples. Add to this the standard of digital signal processing that is available today and you can create some really dynamic sounds. You can get one for �100 or less!!! these days $160?. If you are prepared to experiment and spend, say, �150 or so on a good second hand effects unit, you really can do wonders with this synth at a fraction of the cost of synths today. All it needs is people with imagination and drive. Is that not what creating music is all about?

This synth is,well... really bad in some areas and really good in others. The bass is extremly 303'ie and the strings are ok.. the velocity sensitivity is a lil lacking but then mine looks like it has goten beat up scince 1989 (i bought it last year, 2000)saying that, it is still going and its 12 years old now.. if you see one for UNDER a ton buy it, if its over it best be in really good condition or your being ripped off.
