I've had my 990 for just a few days and I like it. I am becomming quite accustomed to it in this short period of time. The sounds are warm and deep, just as I like it. I bought it to use with my wx7 wind controller. It very recetive to BC data and programming is made somewhat easier with it's screen. I don't miss my U220 or JV880 at all. Accessing the expansion board is easy once you get the hang of it, plus I like being able to load one patch at a time instead of dumping all 64 or more at once.

As to a front panel editor, how about buying a JD-800?
Double your polyphony and get at the vast majority of the features of the JD-990.
No - I'm not being flippant. At the current S/H prices of these things, it really is a cheap way of solving your problem!
PS - the JD-800 is a real beauty in its own right. Buy and enjoy. A lot

AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED, THE JD-990 IS THE BEST SOUNDING SAMPLED WAVEFORM PLAYBACK SYNTH ROLAND HAS MADE TO DATE. I'VE OWNED OR PLAYED A JV30, 35, 50, 80, 90, 880, 1000, 1080, 2080, THE ENTIRE XP SERIES, AND THE A90-EX. THESE SYNTHS CAN'T COMPARE WITH THE JD'S POWER AND CLARITY. EVEN THE JD 880'S SOUNDS DON'T SPARKLE QUITE AS WELL AS THE 990'S. EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS MODULE IS TOP OF THE LINE.
THE ONLY THING I COULD ASK FOR IS A PROGRAMMER. I MEAN A ROLAND DEDICATED PROGRAMMER LIKE THE GREAT PG SERIES FOR OLDER UNITS. EDITING IS QUITE EASY FROM THE FRONT PANEL WITH IT'S BIG SCREEN, BUT A PROGRAMMER WOULD SAVE A LOT OF TIME AND WE ALL KNOW HOW VALUABLE TIME IS!
JUST A GREAT SYNTH. ROLAND PUT A LOT OF TIME AND RESEARCH INTO THIS SONIC BEAST. THAT'S WHY THE NEW LIST PRICE WAS AROUND $2400.00 .
I GIVE THE JD 990 A 5.0 IN ALL DEPARTMENTS.

The JD990 is a nice, very fat, allround synth engine, with little limitations (one exp.slot; exp.board patches not easy accesible, only 24 voices) compared to the JV1080/2080. The sound in general is deeper, richer than the JVs because of the analogue filters. You can do anything with this beast, and it's extremely rewarding to dive into. The strings, pads and leads are far better than on any other Roland (except the JD800). Tip: install the vintage exp.board, it has extra JD990 patches exclsively on it.
