Well i heard alot of stories on the JD990 and the JD800 and il say this , there both good peices of gear and just like everything else it has its strengths and weakness as well but the JD800 is a nasty beast with all the power of editing control you can have and to pair it up with the JD990 makes a perfect duo , Were the JD800 comes up short the JD990 backs it up , also the JD990 filters are sweet and its prob why roland left it alone and didnt spin of any JD series modules after the JD800 & JD990 and i own both , Also when they first came out on the scene it was bad enough to see all that power in control in a layout such as the JD800 plus the JD990 made you choke because back then both units were exspensive as hell specialy the JD990 , Also i hear some people comparing the Jv series to the JD990 & 800 , On that note the Jv series are good but to me the Jv series all sound a like from the 1010 on up until you get to the 3080 & 5080 which both sound great but has some trade offs like sample playback in the 5080 . i also hear the JD800 is a full blown D50 done right and the JD990 layout helped the 5080 but who cares ..but all in all the JD series are good and now you can get your hands on them at a good price since th emarket is flooded with soft synths and and latency headache check out ebay alot gear is droping and falling out dirt cheap on there it a must to have these to great units because pretty soon the way everything is going they will be classic's as well !!!

I got it just about two hours ago and have now fiddled with it about 30 minutes. The sound is AMAZING!!! I own JV-1080 as well but it sounds like crap compared to JD-990. Okay, not really but the difference is HUGE! Everyone has told about the crispines ja clarity. It's real.
The 24 voices is cruelty. Double it and it would be the best synth ever. I thinkin of selling the JV and getting an other JD... well that's 48 voices;-)

Really good. But buy the JD800 instead. It is capable of more than your inspiration and programming skills will aspire to. The sounds are the same and it looks great. This module is worth 4 because other modules and the 800 are superior.

The JD990 has phatter sounds and is closer to a real synthesizer for sound designers, than the JV or XP stuff. If you have Emagic sound diver or MOTU unisyn you will be able to edit the hell out of the JD990. If you want real sounds like piano, guitar or drums get a good sampler like the K2600 or the MPC3000, or get a real band.

I agree. Like I said. I didn't talk of sounds, just interface. JD sounds better. I have JV-2080 and JD-990 side by side in the rack. My JD is updated with Vintage board. JD's engine is not better but audio converters are better sounding. Usually I cut some highs with JD's main eq section. JD is the best digital synth of Roland but now I'm not talking of pianos and flutes.
