This synth is a real gem. It is great fun, reliable and very classic looking and sounding. It sounds a lot like a Prophet 5, in fact. The spec is massive. It has all programming features and more. It is one of the few analogues with midi. It compares very favourably with the Jupiter 8. There are a lot of the 6 about which means that prices are competitive. That can't remain for ever. They are being bought for keeps as analogues become rarer. The arpeggiator and poly cross mod sections are fantastic fun. The filter is impressive. It is multi-mode and very effective. Tuning is quick and easy, though, like all analogues, a re-tune is occasionally necessary. This is one of the best poly synths ever. It is a must for anyone who needs a true anologue poly. I've known several ownwers who love the 6 and consider it better than other classics thay have owned. AND, who would never sell on. That goes for myself as well.

This is, alongside the king of the prophets, the VS, and The Italian-made Elka Synthex, the best (poly)synth ever made. And, it is by far the most accessible of the 3(16000+ around). Also, it's the only one of them that has real VCO's, as the Elka has DCO's, and the VS has Waves. No, it doesn't have quite as punchy bass as the Jupiter 8, but the filter is better and the VCO's are more stable adding to the fact that it's generally more reliable. The OB 8 (best of the Oberheims IMO, more stable tuning and reliable than the Xa, and better envelopes faster attack than the Matrix12/Xpander) is also a contender, and from the pure digital domain comes the Kawai 5000s , a monster additive synth, with unreal, yet digital filters and programmability. These are my humble reflections based on sound, programmability and reliability. In other words, the Jupiter 6 is the best VCO-based poly. If you don't belive me, get one, and learn to program with subtlety, then you'll get out of the harsh and industrial area, and discover its smooth, lush and shimmering sweet spots. From hell to analogue heaven, literally.

The Jupiter 6 is one of the best analog polys. This and he OB8 actually has quite stable osc for VCO synths unlike the prophet 5, memorymoog and Jupiter 8. According to Roland close to 20000 of these were sold, a good thing IMO as this naturally emphasizes its value as an instrument, and lessens the pose factor and the hype. Like the Junos this boards were actually a success for Roland, despite the fact that they were relatively expensive when new. Says it all really, this is a very good analog that can sound everything from screamin´ and industrial to lush and trippin´. If you want a rarity with great pose factor, get the 8, synthex, CS80 or something, but dont be surprised if it breaks down and spareparts are nowhere to be found. You take a chance when buying a piece like that. If youre a programmer and it is the genuine analogue sound which is the prime reason for buying, I recommend checking out the Jupiter 6, Alesis Andromeda or OB 8 instead. They are cheaper, generally more reliable, and spare parts are usually not too hard to find. As these machines have been sold in greater numbers, there is better support for these machines out there. Its as simple as that really.
