I am lucky enough to own both a JP8 and a JP6. It's true they do sound different. To my ears the JP8 sounds more refined... Frankly it's just better. Out of the two I find myself turning to the JP8 everytime. It's the analogue synth that I judge other synths by. Of course they are getting rarer and rarer and consequently more expensive. This is simply because this synth lives up to the hype and the current owners simply don't want to part with them. If you are lucky enough to find one buy it. They don't call it the Roland flagship for nothing!

Jupiter 8 have it all..i ownd jp6 before nice synth for Space fx sound but jp8 blows the bottom away of jp6 dont think its same.oki routing is better on the jp6 but i think its sounds thin but its a good synth and i sold mine and i will buy a new one. the filter -12 rocks and dont talk about the Fat choirs sound you can do.. is cool and the warm sounds you here on every 80 song is from the jp8.At the begining i was a bit dissiponted of the Jp-8. But in dual mode it rocks. Everything comes in mind to how good you are to program yours sounds. When i listen to demo on the net on the Jp-8 it sound like GAP band synth (brass blalba... But when i got the controlls by myself i think its sounds electroic as hell. its good to pads and it can do quite good basses to.Pads are great listen to the indochine early albums.. then you understand. hmm the only synth i can compare with is the Pro-One in fat sound i guess other synths is in another league. I never sell mine thats for sure so pick one up now for good sake its woth every penny. :) good luck!! =) with yours music..

I have the jupiter 6 and the 8 both mint and both vert good synths.I personally prefer the sound from the jupiter 6 and believe it to be the superior machine. Why?It has more res on the filters,is more reliable and does not sound as soft as the jupiter 8 the 6 has more dirt to my ears;the jupiter 8 is liquid ooz and the 6 is sludge that crystalises and the goes rock hard.
I think people go on the numbers game;because its called jup 8 it must be better than the 6?Well that is just untrue, the 6 imho blows the jup 8 out the water. Dont spend 2000 on a jup 8 when you can get a jup 6 for much less.
Both are great machines but I personally think people go for the 8 coz of the numbers.
the 6 eats it alive. ANd the alesis Andromeda sucks the two of them in and spits them out in bubbles. The andromeda is the best poly ever concieved.

I am a KORG guy by nature, but after meeting the 80's synth-god Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran this last July in Vegas, I asked him what his secret was to the ever elusive Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf arpeggiator parts. He told me that I would have to get a Jupiter-8. This is by the way his 'favorite board'. As soon as I got home, I began my search, found/bid/bought one from a cool dude off eBay. This thing works like a charm. I have duplicated the sound perfectly, however, I DID NOT know this thing didn't have a MIDI port, so I could not synch anything analog sounding into my sequencer! rats. this is the only down side to this unit, otherwise, if you are trying to immitate ANY 80's sound, you must have a JP-8 to do so in my opinion. ok, that's it. Happy synthing!

the jp 8 is one of the greatest analogue polys, no further discussion needed. i would like to clarify the myth that jp 8 and 6 sound similar though. yes they sound similar in the way all roland synths of that era sound similar (from the jp 4 to the juno 6). but the differences are too numerous and make them two very different instruments. imho the jp 6 is just as good, more flexible, but a little thinner sound. it is hard to get a weak sound out of the 8, even for a novice; on the 6, even an experienced programmer has to work harder to hit the sweet spots. but when you hit them: sheer excellence. i would suggest as a comparison: jp-8 = gibson / jp-6 = strat. hope this helps.
