I agree with the 'aquatic' describtion of the sonics that this huge 'sizer' produces. But that's in the 'soft spot' area, it can sound very industrial, too...like the J6, but the latter is a cem based machine with a phat, in-yer-face, undescibably alive unison mode sound that knocks the techno sox outta anythin' else out there. The uniqueness of the J8 is the beatiful, trippin' astral LFO-stuff that nothing else can replicate, swoosh-oosh-oosh-uosh-uosh-uish-uish-uosh...its heavenly, and has to be heard. Can make a believer outta anyone. Problem is, the J8 is so damn unreliable, something goes wrong all the time, which, of course, is very annoying, timeconsuming, frustrating and not to mention, costy. But, if you are a patient fella and can afford it, it's totally worth it. The beatiful aquasonics is in a league of its own. Truly trippin'.

Jobe a professional user from NYC writes:
A good synth but not as amazing as you expect. The sounds aren't as broard or warm as the CEM chips create. It isn't as warm as the JX10 either. The build is good. The filter isn't as deep as that on the Jp6. Power supply problems create hassle, especially if you try to fit midi. Voices fail, you repair, and they go again. Parts are also difficult to locate. The Jp6 is easier in that respect and has midi already. Obviously not touch resposive or sophisticated, control wise, in any way. You will constantly worry about failing controls with this synth, often the pitchbend and LFO. They weren't as well looked after as the Prophets so expect damage and butchery. I've dealt in top end synths for some time in the U.S. I always get comebacks with the Jp8. Same with Oberheims. The Jp6 is a better bet and sounds as least as good. The premium price I get and will get is unjustified. But heh! When has common sense ever been an issue in the synth world!

This is a killer board.

I'm so protective of it, that I lock the room that it's in, when I'm away, and I don't take it on stage.

The Jupiter 8 is incredibly FAT sounding, and is dynamite through a reverb module. It took me almost four years to dig through most of its features and subtleties.

Although, not velocity sensitive, it's still amazing to play. The two ADSR's are very responsive, and the filtering is deadly. Unison mode it extremely powerful.

If you ever get the change to see the insides of one of these machines, take it. You won't believe your eyes. No wonder it cost so bloody much when it first hit the stores.

One of my favourite things about this machine is the wild sounds you get when you first power it on. As the energy slowly bleeds out of the circuitry, the remnants set the parameters almost randomly. You never know what you'll hear when you switch it on. That, and the save and load system is very robust.

I would never part with this machine.

I finally pegged the perfect word to describe the jupiter 8. AQUATIC!

It always warbles, and sounds like it is wet, the filter is wet, everyone says syrup, nope, its warter folks, its aquatic.

That is why it will not deliver those techno stabs like say a virus and a jupiter 6 will. its too smooth and liquidy to do such things. it can float, sink, swim, bubble, pop, spitter, putter, swell, and slosh.

MY favorite, but not the best for dance music. it can be used in dance, but only in certain ways, the strings are to watery and lush..

Regan from Innercity N.Y. writes:
I agree on that, I believe you're trying to say that the Jupiter 6 is to the Juno 106 what Neptune is to Venus. The Juno 60 and Jupiter 8 are more punchy than the Jupiter 6 and Juno 106, esp. in the low end, but they are all great synths and the latter has a sound that often sits better in the mix. For this reason, the J8 and J60 are more like players boards (if you exclude the fact that the 8 can be very unrealiable and weights quite a bit), and the 106 and J6 more programmers synths. These can also sound phat, mind you, but largely due to the filters, they don't have to, but excel at trippin, swirling sweeps and strings, and blip blops (not a very scientific describtion, I know). IMO the Jupiter 6 is the very best of them, so if you are to pick one, I highly recommend it be the J6. If you're a programmer, you'll eventually get bored of the others at some point, this holds true for the J8 also, because of the filter (not multimode) and the fact that you can't choose multiple waveforms for the osc as can be done on the J6. The Jupiter 8 is the eight voice giant, though, and unlike the others its rare, and will become increasingly more valuable over time if kept in good condition. There are about 8 times as many J6 around as that of the Jupiter 8 (2500). This, and not the 2 xtra voices, is the reason why it is so costy in comparison. You didn't know that, did you?
