a lot of irrationality surrounds the discussion about the roland jupiters. i find it surprising that the jupiter 4 gets bashed or ignored quite often, and people concentrate on comparing the 8 and 6. by now, i have owned all the jupiter, juno and jx line save for the mks-80. the jp 8 sounds closer to the jp 4 than to the jp 6. the jp 6 is definitely the odd man out, quite different filter sound from the 8, much meaner resonance. all three are superb synthesizers. the jp 8 always sounds quite beautiful, rarely ever naff. the jp 6, you have to hit them sweet spots...but it is more flexible, and if it had dual outputs like the jp 8, it would be almost superior. what amazed me in direct comparison is how close the lowly juno-6 (NOT the tinnier and harsher juno 106) can bet to the jp 8`s lush pads, strings and brasses. for approximating that jp 8 sound on a budget, the juno 6 is the ticket; the jp 4 sounds more oldschool (sh line); the jp 6, on the other hand, is a tad less fat, warm, lush, but can sound more interesting und nuanced (ie more like what you´d get out of a modular).

I had one of these a few years back. Unfortunately, I was stuffed on an ebay deal (haven't we all been!) It arrived with a voice not sounding and several other undisclosed problems. It was a bastard to get fixed. The sound was very powerful. The Jupiter is a great analogue with good polyphony for its age. The reliability is not bad, though mine was a poor example. Generally they are reliable. The range of features is wide. Nice strings and poly cross mod stuff. The Jx10 is also a great synth. Very warm. It is also touch and after touch sensitive. Also, 12 notes of poly, midi and bi-timbral. Make your own minds up before paying the wacking cost of a Jupiter. The Jupiter is a great looking machine. It must be, with the prophet, the easiest synth to sell. I had people queueing up to buy mine.

Arthur Byerly a part-time user from Great Bend, Ks writes:
I myself do not own one "unfortunately," but an old friend of mine bought one when they were brand new. I mean this thing is low serial numbers, not even the DCB port. This thing is powerfull. I wish I could find a more apropriate word but this thing is unique. I can whip up sounds on this thing faster than anything. Reliability problems? My friend has never ever had a single problem with it. My only problem is I dont have one. People say the jx-10 or the Jupiter 6 sound better. I own a jx-10 and id have to disagree. They sound different, better is in the eye of the beholder. There has to be something said for the instant programability with the Jupiter so it has that in its corner. All and all, if you have a sound in your head. This thing will do it and do it quick with its friendly U.I.

Steve a professional user from Manchester UK writes:
The jupiters were good for their time, but have been surpassed in terms of sonic power, versatility and most definately reliability. I owned a Jupiter 8 in the mid 80s and got fed up of its unreliability. I only had to look side-ways at it and its gone out of tune. If you must own a Jupiter go with the JP6 it is just as good if not better than the JP8 and FAR more reliable. Better still get a Yamaha SY77 it is the fattest sounding non analogue synth ever created. As fat as a JP6 cheaper and far better alround. The bass and strings on the SY77 will blow the Jupiters out of orbit literally..
