I purchased my JP 8000 about 2 years ago. I have used it a lot as it is a great synth. It does convincing analog emulations, especially if you use it in a mix. It's got bite, warmth, sparkle, it does it (almost) all! But it is no replacement for a real analog synth. It is a good substitute if you can't afford the real thing, or don't want the risk of buying something old. I am very happy with my JP but it is and always will be a virtual analog synth. It's hard to describe the difference but in my opinion in general they sound just a little too polite, or to predictable is perhaps the right word. The JP 8000 has a sound character of it's own that of course tries to lean a little bit towards the character of the older analog Rolands, but doesn't quite get there. But it is and always will be a cool synth!I am curious what Roland comes up with next to beat this baby!

First off, someone asked about a mail list for the JP-8000. Here it is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JP8000

Now my little review. I'm just a drummer so what do I know.... :)

The JP-8000 kicks serious butt! I've got it sounding for all the world like a stack of Minimoogs, and every time I twist a knob or move a slider something cool happens. And ohhhhh that ribbon controller!!!! The effects are good enough for me - and I'm gonna try running it thru a distortion pedal (thanks to reading this review site). I'm real happy I got it. I was originally gonna use it for two weeks and then return it for refund, but I just cannot bring myself to part w/ it :)

I play with this lil monster daily at work, and i must say, no matter how bad my hatred for Roland burns, i do like this keyboard, I never really looked into it, seeing as how it oly has 2 parts, and the competition like nord and access has up to 16 parts, and also the roland effects compared to most suck. I was also not used to sliders for the cutoff and reso as opposed to knobs, i was first taken back. But after i played with it i saw that you could use two find\gers to move the sliders at the same time! big discovery huh? Still it was cool to me. Ribbon controller, many knobs, portamento. Killer realtime control and the synth is built like a mini tank.

Now the sound, very good, of course some presets suck, but what synth has 100% good presets, but when you find a cool sound ans begin maipulating it, thats when you see the beauty of this synth, the sound were so amazing, very analog, and very inspiring, The sound alone made me forget the 2 part limtiation, crappy effects, and the new price tag.

Bads, he... well its got the roland name on it, 4 parts woudl push me to buy this synth, and more patch storage, but thats always a wish, also a button on the outside that just turned on Distortion, i have no idea why companies forget this feature, korg did well with the ms2000 in that aspect, but roland cant seem to catch on.

Overall, id say if you can get one for undo 800$ do it, its a good VA. Maybe i will get one later on.

This synth has generated a HUGE discussion just in user reviews. This should fill in anyone shopping around for one or considering it - that there is something "special" about this synth.

I personaly have a love/hate relationship with my jp8000. Sometimes I want to *ucking throw it out a window and sometimes I want to rub it down and make sweet, passionate.....wait, nevermind.

The jp8000 has tought me two big lessons in terms of making music with it:

1) This is an unconventional synth, so use it that way.

2) Just when you want to throw it out the window, do something crazy with it and BAM you are on your knees with at least 5 new patch ideas. When this synth rains, it pours....
