Ah my first Roland synth! I came to this board from a Yamaha PSR220 way back when I started to play. As a starter synth this board is great - it's sweet sounding (for the price), it is GM and GS, so it is a good instrument to start getting into computer based recording and sequencing with, and it is nice and easy to use. Another advantage is its portability - it's nice and light, an very slimline. Actually, I miss its curves - I've got an XP80 now and it's all hard egdes and corners :::sighs nostalgically:::
On the downsides are the huge limitations when it comes to editing sounds - you get a simple ADSR envelope and that is it! A good intro to programming, but you soon grow out of it. Also limiting later on is the spongy action to the keyboard. I never noticed until I upgraded to the JV80, but the keys aren't too solid.
In summary, if you are looking at getting a starter synth, definately give this some thought, but you would also be well advised to take a look at a second hand Korg N5 or N5EX, and also the X5D. I'm not sure how the XP10 compares, but I'd imagine you would benefit from trying one of those out too!
I give this synth a 4 because, as a simple, no frills synth it is pretty damn good, and also because it's expandable - not bad for the price range!!!
