I happened upon one of these for a pittance. Overall, the sound is clear and deep. Interface is pretty simple. Best of all, there are at least 75 awesome, and I really mean awesome, sounds in there, mostly basses/ pads/ leads imo, but also some really sweet late 80's house sounds including the coolest house organ ever. You need to have some midi-competency to really explore it's depths.
I wonder why exactly these were pulled from the market. I've heard that there was copyright infringement in the sounds?
the beats are pretty wack, but I could see triggering parts of them from an external drum machine like the other reviewer said.
It's a nice plus that there is an audio through. Roland makes solid gear.

This box kicks if you have controllers to get the most out of it. It's very responsive. If you have a Phat Boy or something similar that can send NRPNs to play with filter settings and so on, you're golden.
Also, the loops, while dated, sound fantastic if you just use pieces by triggering them with a normal MIDI drum pattern that's only hitting sixteenth note snippets of these fat, fully produced loops of audio. Dial up one of the presets that has a lot of different loops keymapped across the board and try transposing a MIDI drum pattern up or down to see what I mean. Very nice stuff with high presence, premixed and ready to go. It's not the era it was made that matters, it's how creative you are in *using* it. Be an electronic musician, not an electronic couch potato. This box has a LOT to offer for almost no money if you have other gear to get the nectar out of it.

This sound expander is quite a secret tip! If you use sound diver to programme your own sounds! Most of the presets are old fashion and don't present the real power of the synth engine!!

Had one of these for about a week. Read the reviews, sounded quite good so bought it off of Ebay. Got it home, plugged it in and was totally underwhelmed.
If might have sounded good back in '95 but nine years down the line it is really showing its age. Dated loops and samples and pretty dull, lifeless sounds. I love Roland gear but this is a bit of a non starter; compunded by the fact that editing the sounds is a pretty troublesome I got rid of mine for more than I paid for it luckily and bought an SH-101 instead. Now that's a beauty...
Do yourself a favour and don't get all rose-tinted when considering buying one of these. Go for something totally classic & retro or get some bang up to date kit otherwise you could in in for a disapointment.

I have bought this module 4 years ago for 300$ and it was the last one in our store.First I was thinking to buy dance expansion card for my Roland Jv-1080, but there was already out of market. I found in this module very good percussions, bass and leads.I use hi-hat (program 115) a lot for my tracks, because it's simply the best. I like this module very much, perhaps the bad thing is about creating sounds, but i'll try to program it thru Midi Quest software.
