I bought it for allmost nothing...in really MINT conditions. You could even think it's new when you give a look at it.

It's really Roland end 70's top quality gear, heavy, and well built.

The possibilities are not huge, you have a string section, a basic synth section and a bass section.

I would compare it with the ARP Omni (that i'm owning too).

Soundwise, the ARP Omni is much more raw sounding, specially the string section. The Roland is much more sweet. The Roland Chorus (that you can set on 3 positions) is very 70's oriented and the stereo output add this dimension that you will never find on a ARP Omni.

Different machines for a different sound.

Another plus point is the Input jack. Take another polyphonic synth (with octave divider from the seventies) or one of the early 80's that don't own a chorus effect on board and let it run into the Paraphonic Chorus ! Really good sounding...

A good delay and reverb (Space Echo, SDE-2500, etc...) is the best friend of a string machine !

The synthesizer and bass section is usefull but don't expect to many complex sounds. It's good for sweeps, pads, and the bass is good to explode your speakers. Huge and agressiv 70's Roland Sound (remember me a little bit the Jupiter 4 sound).

Like said before, take a good multi-effect and you will discover that this machine (that can be found for allmost nothing) even it's quite limited, can sound very sweet and deep !

The next thing to the solina in therm of string sounds.

I bought a paraphonic 505 for about 600 in the late 70's ... the strings under the third (bottom) chorus setting are very 'comfortably numbish' .. the oscillators will make some of the dark side of the moon sounds as well ... but the BASS synth on this ROCKS .. it has HUGE bass sounds ! gare

the paraphonic 505 is as good as the solina string machine. i hve heard both together and they are sounding similar. i have heard the paraphonic on waveviolator and aqua blue music ambient recordings. the string sounds are very chorused to make the sound thicker. looks like a roland vocoder

James a part-time user from Australia writes:
I purchased mine for $650.00 (AUS) in mint condition. It has a split keyboard with 3 parts being, String section, Bass section and Synth section. You can turn off the bass and play strings on the whole keyboard or run in ensemble mode with everything going. The strings sound is beautiful and bittersweet and the bass is harsh. I use heaps of vibrato and sustain mixed with the chorus and it really sings. It also has an EXT IN jack in the back panel so you can run other synths through it and use it's chorus effect. Forget the digital emulators - get the real thing. It's the boss

What a heavy beast the chipboard casing is very nice and the coloured knobs are acceptable. The keys are white and the plug at the back goes into your wall. Then........smashing ensemble chorused mush synth sounds. Waaaaaaaaa
