I bought it for allmost nothing...in really MINT conditions. You could even think it's new when you give a look at it.
It's really Roland end 70's top quality gear, heavy, and well built.
The possibilities are not huge, you have a string section, a basic synth section and a bass section.
I would compare it with the ARP Omni (that i'm owning too).
Soundwise, the ARP Omni is much more raw sounding, specially the string section. The Roland is much more sweet. The Roland Chorus (that you can set on 3 positions) is very 70's oriented and the stereo output add this dimension that you will never find on a ARP Omni.
Different machines for a different sound.
Another plus point is the Input jack. Take another polyphonic synth (with octave divider from the seventies) or one of the early 80's that don't own a chorus effect on board and let it run into the Paraphonic Chorus ! Really good sounding...
A good delay and reverb (Space Echo, SDE-2500, etc...) is the best friend of a string machine !
The synthesizer and bass section is usefull but don't expect to many complex sounds. It's good for sweeps, pads, and the bass is good to explode your speakers. Huge and agressiv 70's Roland Sound (remember me a little bit the Jupiter 4 sound).
Like said before, take a good multi-effect and you will discover that this machine (that can be found for allmost nothing) even it's quite limited, can sound very sweet and deep !
The next thing to the solina in therm of string sounds.
