I really like this unti now, when I've figured it all out (didn't get the manual when I bought it). It's quite editable and has alot of sounds... Much happier with this one than I would be with a 808 or 909...

It's a credit to Roland that a drum-machine from 1992 can still deliver the goods, 9 years on.

I bought mine in 1994, and I couldn't believe the dynamism of the drum sounds and the openness of the interface.

My only disappointment was the omission of the TR909 hats. Why Roland, why?

There are some many sounds on this, that you will not run short of opportunities. The Swing function is superb.

I recently got rid of some of my standalone kit (modules, etc), but at this time I will NOT sell my R-70 for love nor money!

Find one: buy it and keep it!

I compared it to BOSS DR-660, Alesis SR-16 and Zoom 123; the R-70 is a lot better. Go for this or the ROLAND R-8 MKII, which has 6 more individual outs (no backlit display and costs more money though!). I haven't heard much good about the BOSS DR-770 and it's not very cheap.

Hey-HEEEEY! I got my very own now! One thing I wasn't totally aware of at first was the Song/Pattern models this thing can do! Man, is this SWANK! Quick backing for song ideas and jam sessions with no fuss! Even does the damn rolls into choruses and bridges too! And the 808's are superb! To me, it just gets funkier all the time! Ride cymbals on the positional pad...man! Sweet! I guess the R-8 does the same with velocity, but I just like the fact you 'visually' know where you're playing! And can stay there easily! This box is definately underrated! My only 2 gripes are Step recordings from scratch is a bitch on it, and that layers don't have their own volume control for better mixing. Other than that, this thing is great tool anywhere - with anyone!

Roc Bass a professional user from USystematicA writes:
The R-70 is a fantasic drum machine. The sounds are amazing and with some tweaking, you can come up with some crazy stuff. It is really easy to use and can do some complex beat arrangements. The effects are okay but if you use them in ways they were not intended, that's were fun starts. I've used it live and it can do some real damage, plus altering the sounds in realtime just does your head in. The 808 kick is too nice and the 909(not really close to a 909 sound) can be fucked with to kick holes in your speaker.
