This is a funky little beat-box. Most of the basic bass drums and snares are sadly quite bland, but the electronic and percussion samples are excellent.
There is massive scope for expression; the sound editing possibilities are surprisingly extensive for a drum machine. There are also many global functions that can really mess up the sound. The FX section is cute and clean and the provision of four outputs dramatically enhances the R70's potential - the similar sounding Boss DR660 falls short here.
It's getting on a bit now - 1992 OS - but still very, very useful with a palette of sounds that will take a few years to get through.

At first I was a bit leary of getting into it. Never did like Rolands 'user interfaces', and the manuals (x2) seemed to thick for a 'beat box'. Then I heard the sounds... WOW! I had to trigger at least a few for my tracks (the cymbals are excellent!) Then I found out they're all editable and layering and control assignable and all that! It turned into a very 'deep' machine, but with a pretty easy side to it too! Some of the access and pattern edit modes irked me, but maybe I'm not 'used' to Roland? Even now, with all my gear capable of beating the R-70 to a pulp - I see these 2nd hand stores with them for <>$300, I still want one to keep!

Roland R-70 is a great drummachine! I use it as a homestudio reggae drummer. It really satisfy your ceativity, and it�s easy to use...I love to use it!

I think this is an exceptional machine. I am brand new to the synth world and I am nothing but pleased with my R-70. For someone who had no previous experience with equipment as such, I had no trouble figuring out the R-70. I took to it right away. I have had it for about 3 months now and I am still learning about what it is capable of. I am afraid I'll wet my pants if I use the DM5 in conjuction with it. Awesome!

Nice machine! It's really usable for my dub tracks ... The only things i don't like is that i can't control the fx parameters realtime via dedicated knobs; to use the value slider for this is not the best way cause then i can't do pattern switching or something else. And i miss the volume sliders from my old TR 707 ... But let's stop negating, this gem has a graphical pattern editor, backlit display, lots of kicks/snares, lots of pattern functions, very complete midi implementation and - for my opinion the best feature - you can edit sound parameters like attack damp, pitch, decay, nuance, brilliance, panning, fx send ...not just globally, but also in each pattern step! It's fucking brilliant!
