The smooth dexterity of the 808 sound is timeless. Add a tempo-tapped-delay on the snares and wow.
For a prime example, check out almost anything on Orbitals "In-Sides" CD.. 808 aplenty.

PART OF MY SETUP RUNS OUT OF MY TR808 AND I THINK ITS AN AWESOME SETUP (ALA EARLY 80S ELECTRO)BUY A TR808 AND A TR909(IF YOUR LUCKY>> IN MINT CONDTION AND YOUR IN THE BIZ!!KNOW USE YOUR HEAD AFTER THAT TO BUILD YOUR FOUNDATION AND THEN YOUR LANDSCAPE!!!!

I like the sound of this machine. I too sample them, others and the MUSICIAN/SCIENTIST(long post) are correct in that this machine is easy to sample, and more versitle that way. I like the sound of this way more than the TR-909 machine.

I have A VERY FINE 808 sample set for my A3000, and the internal filters and effects more than make up for any knob tweaks that can be had. I have a CD with every possible knob setting on the TR808 machine. Really, every tuning, and snappy setting. I leave the "tweaking on the fly", and the "direct, pleasurable experience than being able to play/press/tweak the actual, tactile keys/buttons/knobs" to people who don't know what they want, and need to "experiment" to get it. ***All you can do is tune it, or make it more snappy.***All possible with sample mapping. While I play my keyboard, the sequencer can alter the sounds. I don't get off playing drum machine controls. If I do need to tweak something live, my sampler allows for that. It really is more economical, and makes monetary sense to sample the machine than to buy it. No question about it. The purist are delusional, and in denial. C'mon, this is electronic music we're talking about. Sampling allows you to reverse the wave, sound some sounds at the same time that on the original machine, impossible. Not to mention the fact it was pre-midi. You need an retrofit to make it so. This isn't smart economically for most people when you can get the same identical sound sampled. About the TR909, it's way over used, and obnoxious. The TR909 is harsh, and slaps you in the face. The kick reminds me of someone bouncing a basket ball on an empty gym floor. People I talk to, are so sick of it. The TR808 saunters, cozzy up against you, and begs you to groove with it. Like a seductress. Very gentle, but yet hypnotizing. At the same time it can "jam" "kick" Rap/hip hop, and even in some techno/d&b it's the mainstay. Very versatile machine. Especially once your start wrangling the sounds with filters, and affects. Most of these people/purist who insist on having the "real thing" want one so they can say "I have one". If you do, I hope you have parts, because they don't make them anymore. I'm not speaking to those of you who have had your's forever. I'm speaking to the kids. If you can't get identical sound from samples, then you need to get a better sampler not the cheap playback machines or get better, longer samples. If your samples sound like a "mouse fart" get better samples or sampler. You're spending all this money for a piece of used gear, get something new, and better samples. At least you can reload the samples, but you will be hard pressed to find parts for your newly purchased used machine. AND YESSS!!!! I GET BBBBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!! When I trigger the sound. Or PLAT!. Hiss at the end and all. **JUST LIKE THE 808 BOX** I get the ticky, tick, hissing hi-hats, and cymbals as well. The snappy 0~10 as well as the tune 0~10. cymbals the same all tunnings, and decay. Like I stated, I have very good samples, and a fine sampler with 128mb of RAM in it. I can call up any given kit I like quickly. Again with any setting that is possible ont he real machine. The CD even has the preset LOOPS/PATTERNS of the machine at different tempos. So again, if you can't afford the box, I do testify that it **can** be authentically sampled with the right equipment, and no one listening has to know! ;)

What's this thing about sampling the 808? Who cares? I certainly don't. I bought an 808 because I like the programming interface, and you can't sample that. For me, staring at a monitor and waving a mouse, is a far less direct, pleasurable experience than being able to play/press/tweak the actual, tactile keys/buttons/knobs. Playing 808 samples from a computer is like collecting porn pictures. Physical contact with the living thing is incomparably superior - if you can get it.
