808 is analog and if you are still using one, you better be using some analog gear to utilize all the triggers.
The kick is unique, you can't sample it and be happy because when you place two 808 kicks side by side on the sequencer, you get a different tonality to it.
That said... If you really want analog drum sounds and beefy bases, invest in a doepfer or a Serge modular. You can create even HUGER sounds and have complete control, of course you'll need a MIDI/CV box to trigger everything, but your music will not sound like it is a TR box.
That said, I use the holy trinity of techno all the time for all purposes (303/808/909) I was able to find decent deals on all the boxes and find new uses for them all the time.
My word of advice to new producers though is to not run out and get an old roland box FIRST... Get a bunch of processing gear, a sequencer, a sampler, more processors, some OTHER synths... And then.. When you've got a nice studio going, add part of the holy grail and you will be very happy. But otherwise you're going to sound like 90% of the mediocore techno/house from the last 20 years.

The 808 is my favourite analogue drum machine (growing up with the Electro sound of Egyptian Lover, Hashim etc) but other oldies such as the Pearl Syncussion dump on it from a great height for sound creation. Basically it's like this, if you want to rehash 80s influenced electro use an 808 (just like for "authentic" acid use a 303 and cheesey house you'll be wanting one of those over-rated, overplayed and altogether draining 909s). Surely, if you want to progress your music in a new direction there is no way that an 808 is of any use to you unless you sample it, mangle the sounds and create new noises. If you're content with churning out what you loved to listen to as a kid go ahead and buy one but you will get better kicks and percussion from a Syncussion, System 100M, Model 101/102, Microwave Mk1 and FS1r (no shit!) and of course nicer hats from a 606.
Retro? Why bother.
Does electronic music need a third decade of artists using the same basic electronic drum kits? Really?

the original and still the best why all these years all these companys are trying to imitade it and all u peeps that say its ok but..@$#%^!*(()&&^%%...are just jealous of the fact that u dont got one haHA!!or u think your 808 kit in your synth or imitation drum box or what ever gives u the (works for me attitude)>>>then smack your face a transister rhythm 808 is in a class of its own and by the way i paid only $450 mint)) from an idiot who bought the novation and know 7 months later he is crying for $800-$900 for the TR-808 to get it back!!!

I used to own an 808, and thought is was the BEST drum machine ever, ( I personally don't like the 909 much, its sounds start sounding a bit too realistic for my blood). But I have found that it IS possible to sample this box effectively. I ended up with a huge sample set, and picked the best representations of each sound. The cool thing about the 808 is that each one sounds slightly different, with all of those 5% components in there, variations occur. I much prefer the sampled 808 in my sampler though, and think that my sample set sounds WAY more realistic than any in any drum machines Ive heard. What the hell do people use to sample these things?!?! You would think that Roland could sample their own machine true to original form, but the samples in my MC303 SUCK! What the hell 808 made that RS?
Anyway, it is possible to sample it, and I really don't miss my 808 very much
