I've had couple 909s and regret selling them. Something about the interface makes it impossible not to come up with cool patterns. The swing/shuffle is loose and groovy. The sounds need some help from the mixer and effects, but recorded properly they are impossible to duplicate on samplers. Like the MPC3000, the SP1200, etc, the original is the only way to go...

I have used samples made samples and stole samples but I always end up switching on the tr909. Nothing can beat it nothing can compare to it it's the producers choice the peoples choice and the musicians choice. This sound pops up in all kinds of dance music cause no has made anything any better. I�ve owned one for 15 years and tried to replace it with the novation drum machine, which is not bad but is not as warm or as punchy as the real thing.

I just purchased a 909 about 2 months ago. Every song that I've done since has benefited from the sounds this thing produces. I don't think that you can beat this machine to get the right sound for dance music. I think that the fact that the sound is so recognizable makes it commercial-dance music friendly. I mean, when I hear that kick sound in a tune (and claps, hats and toms etc.), I instantly want to groove to it. I don't think that's something that will be outlived, no matter how old it gets. People (I'm refering to the general audience) listening to dance music don't care what's making the sound, they just care about the sound itself...

To everyone whom is interested in the Roland Transistor Rhythm 9O9... This is ONE fantastic beatbox. I can't rave enough about how good these machines are in making electronic music. Run the 909 through a proper live room PA and it will knock your chest in. And you REALLY can work a crowd in a frenzy using this machine live. The 16 beat step sequencer is fantastic, a real intuitive way to program; absolutely a doodle when creating live music. What can I say, I love all the sounds even the toms now, in 2002! It is the tightest rhythm machine I've worked with so far (SP1200, MPC, etc). It is a precision piece of gear and I'm afraid, worth every penny. I don't blame the guy or gal on ebay paying $3000 for one of these. At least they got one at that time. If you experiment with the features you CAN write orginal or interesting music with one.
God bless Todao for the TR909!!! When my last one got destroyed I could'nt bear to look at any pictures of one... After three long years I got to replace it... I would rather lose the rest of my kit than lose this piece of gear. A real bonifide classic!!!!!

The Transistor Rythm 909 is the MACHINE! people who say it�s overrated don't know what they talk about!, Facts!! it came out 1983! i was personaly tired of it's sound! in 1993 it is still used TODAY in 90% of all Dance/Techno music. I had mine (and a TB-303) for 10 years now and never gonna sell it! X09base ex-1 box, ex. bla... bla... bla...!!!!! IT'S ONLY ONE ORIGINAL!!!! Regarding 909 vs 808, it's a matter of different music styles!! the 808 is great! the 909 is BEST! but tooooo Expensive!!
