I love my 909. Nothing beats THAT sound... but after using it for a while, I have come to the conclusion that it sounds even better if you run it through a high quality compressor. I use a JoeMeek SC2.2 and they work wonderfully together.

The 909 is far more versatile and sophisticated than people think; it can do some fiece breakbeats if programmed carefully. I highly recommend it.

how can anyone not like this box. the BEST thing to use for drums in 80% of techno. so perfect for live performance, and so good sounding too. plus you get all the chicks if youve got a 909... well, mabye not

I have used the 909 for years... it kicks ass. Many other boxes these days make good emulations, but there is a reason people pay for the original. Nothing hits me right in the chest like a well tuned 909kick. I love the thing.

Though the possibilities of those X0X's are limited it sure beats software sequence programming. The sound of a analog drum can not be compensated by gear of the year 2000. I own a 909, 808, 707 and 606 which i would never sell. Next to that i own a X-Base09, a MC-505, a RM1X, a ER-1, a ES-1, a MPC200XL with which i can make my drums too, but it just lacks that little bit of feel that the analog gear got. I know it's easy for me to say as i've got all the gear i could ever want but as a true musician i just can appreciate the imperfectness of analog gear more than all the digital gear you can buy now.....

you all have never programmed a 909 have you? its not just about the sounds... i agree through midi it might be stale just doing quarter note BDs, but add some flam, shuffle, and you cant touch it. i own both an 808 and a 909 and even an er-1.

why would anyone bash any of em? every box has there own identity. I would never substitue a 909 for an 808, and I would never substitut a 808 for a 909.

i can do stuff on an ER-1 that I cant do on a 909... but that holds true the other way around too.

so it costs more... so what, get it when you have the money, and you dont need anything else.

status symbol my ass BTW, i could claim the 808 is a status symbol too...

and as for "ive been hearin it since 85" - ive been hearing the 808 just as long! remember marvin gaye, michael jackson, hip hop music...

anyway my point is buy what you want and dont worry what people think about your gear. if you make good music that suits you with the gear you got then fuck everyone! youre the best!

live life, be happy

just my two cents

as for the gear i think it rocks...
