I was very happy with my v-synth since I bought it in '04. I just now (finally) installed v.2. In a word, WOW! The quality of the samples is vastly improved, and it's like I bought a new synth. I made a half-hearted effort at loading v.2 a couple years ago, but ran into a technical snag and decided I was happy enough with v.1 that I wouldn't bother updating. This week I was trying to figure out if I could use the v.1 arpeggiator as a step modulator, and researching that, I saw that v.2 has a step mod. So I did the update for that, and now I can hardly believe my ears. It's punchier, deeper, cleaner. I had a ton of fun programming in v.1, but now with the additional functions in v.2, I'm in tone heaven.

V-Synth is so deep, and therefore it's not for everyone. It's a sound designer's tool, not for market taste as someone mentioned, if you are into experimental-electronic sound design then go for it.

V-Synth is not an analog synth and you cannot comare the two, V-synth is a sampler with Variphrase, It's not even a Virtual Analog, so please never compare a Lamborghinni to a very nice bicycle, V-Synth is a soft-synth in a hardware form.

I liked this synth right away, but when the v2 OS came out I installed it and now I am blown away. Spectacular sounds and you can emulate the JP-8000 now too. (also has enhanced ways of browsing sounds) I think the full power is now there with v2 OS. I think the variphrase technology is great too - Its fun to play with. Probably the best Roland synth yet - it captures the best of former Roland boards, but adds new sounds of every variety and is easy and fun to use. (thanks touch screen) I have had this for a year now, but I have still more to discover. I would rate v1 OS a 4, but v2 OS is a 5. If you have been unsure about it - Definately upgrade the OS to v2, you will be happy you did.

I love this keyboard, with the touch screen I find it very very easy to navigate. Great for sound mangling, and experimenting with samples. Its sound depends a lot on what you put into it and how you program so some of the critiscisms about the sound below seem naive. I will concede though the virtual analog side is a bit lame next to a "real" analog synth, but apart from purists most punters couldnt tell and its still useful. The sound can get digital aliasing with extreme settings but I can live with those things as a limitation. This one is for synthesis not emulation and for people with imagination.
