I do not actually own one of these synths but, a friend of mine has it and he seldom uses it so I have kind of half adopted it. As an average of all the sounds put into the unexpanded synth, I would have to say that it is mediocre. I have found better sounds on my Roland E-35 "Intelligent Synthesizer"....such as any of the brass instruments. The best direction to go with the XP-50 is to completely forget that it is a workstation. You will have a much better time using it to program Your own synth patches....believe me it is worth the effort. I have made a patch that will rival "LETTER FROM PAT" among other sounds. Try layering triangle waves in a 1, 2, 4 harmonic pattern with stereo EQ...PanDelay, and Chorus; set the "LFO's" to just a slight modulation and the TVA's to slow attacks and medium velocities....I cheated a little from the patch "GIGANTALOG". The only drawback is that the frequency range is not steep enough for additive; I found that my DX7 II FD/E has a much steeper range but, then again it takes 3 "operators" to make one equivalent triangle wave. Don't lose hope....I have figured most of the pickel out without a manual!! I also mainly used the synth to play MIDI files from my computer through the synth as an alternative to cheesy wavetable cards and dated FM cards. Have jolly good fun!!

I bought mine about 2 years ago. One problem I have is that the sequencer tends to crush/shut down whenever I shift from one midi-file to another quickly. Sounds familiar?

I was very happy with the xp-50 until I took it into the Multi-Million

dollar facility to track 3 songs for a project at $3500.00 a song/plus

points. To my surprise thee outputs on my xp-50 are so loud and noisey

that when I tryed to lay down one part (guitar) it was very clear to me

and the client that your xp-50 had just lost me $10,500.00/plus points.

Due to the Fact that I trusted that your new xp-50 was all I needed(along

with my Alesis Drum machine which sounds fine in a studio)I didn't try to get

any other board which if I had the chance to do all over again,I most

definitely would have purchased a reliable work station. So now I'm still paying

for a work station I can't use due to its lousy outputs and since i lost the

Gig I can't afford my families Christmas. So now I am talking with a lawyer

to see what my options are. Thank you Roland for -ucking up my families

Christmas and leaving me without a way to make the money to pay for your

Product. My home Address is Mr. Ricardo Broadus @ 2244 Montrose Ave.#1

Montrose CA, 91020 (818 249-5291) I would like to hear from someone about this

as soon as possible. Very Unsatisfied Ricardo Broadus

Roland is one of my first serious synths (the first was Ensonig TS10), and I am very satisfied with it.

It has very nice sounds and general atmosphere of the way it sounds is excellent. Of course, the percussion could be better, and

sequencer sometimes makes me mad, but in general, it is a very nice workstation.

The price of it in Ukraine is $1600.
