THE best synth every produced - period! The range of sounds, from FAT analog, to sparkling digital, that the D-50 can produce remain unsurpassed.
It has greater depth and sonic possibilities (even to this day) than anything before or since.
Get your hands on the "Star Trek Voices" patch, play a fat chord and tell me if that isn't the thickets, most mind-blowing sound ever to come out of an instrument that doesn't have a "Fairlight" badge on it! :-)

The D50 is one of the worst pieces of crap to come from Roland. It has horrible bass, electric piano, strings, effects, pianos, atmospheric textures etc. People do not be fooled! Today's keyboards boards have amazing quality samples and for those looking to have sounds that imitate the sounds of the 80's then be assured that today's keyboards do an excellent job at that also. I do not understand why anyone would want to keep that keyboard unless they're just looking to sell it to nostalgic musicians who think it is somehow still special. I had a D50 and when the M1 came out I sold it. When the O1 came out I sold the M1. When the Triton came out I got rid of the O1. When virtual sample libraries gave me better sounds I got rid of The Triton and I now Have a Motif ES8 with every best sample Library at my fingertips and a Macbook Pro. Who needs clutter with these crappy keyboards with horrible lame sounds? The worthy vintage keyboards are the Moogs, Oberheims, Sequential Circuits, Even Roland's own Super JX for analog sounds but the D50????? That is a piece of crap and worthless in comparison to today's evolved and vastly improved sounds through modeling technologies and superb High Bit samples. Throw that D50 in the trash!!

Folks, I introduce to you the amazing Roland D50. Everything that came after it has improved some aspect of sound with newer more complicated engine designs that we must admit sound absolutely wonderful. But have any of the new wonder boards taken away the lasting appeal of the D50, of course not. The new boards are geared for the all in one dream studio for those who can afford them and who most likely want to compose and sequence in one compact environment. The Roland D50 was made for the musician who needs bigger than life sounds that touches lives when skillfully played. The Roland D50 (alongside that other untamed beast the Yamaha DX7-any series) is a monument to music, one of the best synths pre 90's that Roland has ever designed (along with the Super JX) and a true testament to wonderful out of this world sounding patches. Let me try to explain it another way. Jet Li is a great martial artist along many other amazing acrobats in today's martial arts films with all the super unbelievable effects being utilized but Bruce Lee's raw martial arts talent will never be replaced by today's hyped up martial arts effects scenery. In short Jet Li is great but he's no Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee was, is and always will be the standard of measurement when it comes to raw and pure energy that continues to draw praise and attention. The Roland D50 is the same in that aspect for it's amazing and distinct sound architecture that continues to amaze me. Me, a guy who plays the Fantoms, Oasys, Motifs, Tritons ETC and still goes......gee I'd love to spend all night on my D50 playing, programming, recording and enjoying its Linear Arithmetic sound.

Let's be brutally honest. We don't see many 1995 honda civic si hatchbacks anymore. They are rare! Ask any owner to sell it to you and it is NOT likely they will for good reason.....value, reliability, and performance (I own one which still rocks hard after 200k miles on the same engine) The Roland D50 is similar in that we barely ever see it anywhere anymore but it has some amazing ingredients at its core. Sound, reliability and performance. Sound unlike anything before or after and not to be compared to the realistic sound modeling or sample playback engines on any boards. The D50 is and will always be in a class by itself. Looks fantastic, and sounds out of this world. It is the mother of all synthesizers and not even the OASYS can touch it. THE EARS WILL TELL YOU WHY. If u can find one grab it and you will never look back! Just like with the DX7IIFD. It has earned a rightful golden throne in synth history.
