This is a great module to turn to for your basic bread & butter sounds (nice rhodes, organs, & interesting glassy synth pads). The acoustic piano ain't bad but I prefer my Clavinova digital piano for that. Not very good for lead synth sounds. It does have portamento, which is a nice feature for a budget unit like this. Tweaking can be done via a number of freeware software editors.

Many have said this is more of a beginner's synth/module, which is true if you are trying use it for your whole sound or as a GS playback module. But when simply used as a standard rackmount module, e.g. for just one sound or several layered sounds (with some tweaks from the analog-like parameters), it has some very professional applications, and a professional sound. You just need to put all of its power into a more specific targeted sound, and use it as just one of your several synths.

I have used it to get an awesome Mellotron sound, which I discovered by downloading a Genesis MIDI file (Watcher of the Skies). You can get it from this site: http://www.partnersinrhyme.com/midi/midiartists/genesis.shtml (the main Genesis MIDI site seems to be down right now). Just download that file and let your Sound Canvas start playing it through a MIDI sequencer. Then just save the two strings parts in your setup. It uses two separate string sounds layered together with some detuning, chorusing, etc. It sounds exactly like Tony Banks' mellotron sound from that recording! For some added depth, layer it with the Symphonic patch from the Korg M1 or something similar, but it's just fine on its own. Very dark and menacing.

I made a 'Performance Editor' for SC-55mkII with SoundDiver. It can layer four sounds and store the patches. Using this, I emulated Polyphonic Vector Synthesis to some extent. For downloads and sound examples, visit my site. http://homepage.mac.com/synth_seal/html/index.html If you find anything about how to use SC as a synth, please let me know.

I Have a CM500 (the SC55/MT32 combination). I like the piano, the drums and synth stuff. The bones are weak, the french horn is usable. The choir stuff is nice, the strings are touchy but okay. All in all, it has turned out to be my most used. Mainly, because I can send a bogus bank number (like cco # 0 value 120) and it will mute the channel and I can use another synth. Very few 16 part modules can do it.

There seem to be several people with problems getting SCC1 to work on Win95/98. I have just moved the card from Win 3.1 to 98 machine - I appear to have no driver disks. What do I do? Any help appreciated.
