Just bought a s/h U220 for £40 off ebay (baragin of the year?) Had one of these back in 1991, it was superb then, for all the 'Real' sounds, piano, strings, etc etc & in 2005 its still a great unit, still sounds excellent. This unit is one of Roland secret gems. As others mentioned, your gear may come and go, change over the years but this one is still excellent & but I went and bought one of these 15 years after i got mine! If you looking for high quality real sounds, rather than synth sounds.(it will do synth, but don't expect to get mad filter sweeps!) Buy one off ebay, you'll be friends forever I promise! One of Rolands finest 1u racks ever.

I have been gigging for over 20 years and various gear has been and gone but the U20/U220 has been forever present in my setup. The U20/U220 is a sample player so thats why filters are so limited, but its also the main reason why it sounds so good.

I am a hobbyist who is a songwriter, I love the U220 because all the basic sounds you need are availabe. Apart from the drums which are weak. But there is one disasterous trait when recording if you use the stereo outs, as I did for backings for a musical. The fretless bass sound is sampled out of phase. So when played back through a mono system. all the bottom end sound was lost due to phase cancellation. A disaster in the theatre. Be warned!

got this for a nice 50 because the volume knob had fallen off. I love it. I got it because Liam Howlett (from Prodigy) used the strings, piano and a few other sounds for the first & second album. Turned it on and got the lovely bright piano and fat strings. I like the fact you can edit the ADSR. the choir3 patch is evil when played low! hmmm - there are some bad things like - the fact the user interface is soo complicated and the manual is too geeky to understand! oh! the FX are great!
